(25,841 posts)And until people stop defending that, nothing will change.
Along with the bullshit thoughts and prayers, there's the obligatory homage to "responsible" gun owners, who clearly would never perpetrate such horror. But that's as much crap as the thoughts and prayers. Again, as long as the NRA owns legislators, so long as supposedly reasonable people fight for background checks and registration, so long as anyone can buy a gun at a gun show or from a private citizen, these things will happen.
I refuse to get exercised about these slaughters any more. It's a routine occurrence, rather like the sun shining in Phoenix in the summer, or snow falling in Colorado in the winter.

(14,489 posts)A self-absorbed society constantly soaked in consumerism feeds this monster. We're no longer a culture of buying what we need but instead one that buys anything we want (or what the guy on TeeVee or social media tells us we need). Just put that automatic weapon of choice on your credit card!
Humanity previously turned to things like religion, meditation, and community to dispel fears but now people think they can just isolate and buy their fears away with lots of guns and ammo, security cameras and multiple bolts for the doors.
Our wealth and fear of losing things has stripped away the humility and grit we gained during the Great Depression and WWII.
Just some random thoughts.....

(1,568 posts)and I read his racist screed. Very disturbed and disgusting person. The writing really worries me. It doesn't come off as rambling word salad like some of the stuff we've seen. I fear it will resonate with others who have been indoctrinated in that world and who have further been emboldened by the similarly sounding rhetoric that has come from Trump and those around him. The way he is encouraging others to do the same is very worrisome. I've browsed forums like 8chan and whereas I used to think it was just trolls trying to be edgy with the intent to upset people by saying things with the most shock value. It's clear to me now that there are a lot of people on there who actually believe what they are saying. It's not what it was a 10 or 15 years ago. It's literally indoctrinating people to hate and act out violently. It's scary to think that he is outright encourages these same sorts of people to act out the same way he did.
I don't even know where to begin with stopping this, because I don't think you could really shut them down fully. At most you can make it more difficult to operate, but it would be like whack-a-mole. Also don't want to overcorrect in a way that can make it even worse.

(43,123 posts)what a marvelous and well-trained officer. We must appreciate we have professional law enforcement and they do their best. Sure there are flaws in the system, but we still have constabulary forces that respond to defend public safety every day. It is something to build on if our political system will awaken.

(12,165 posts)EL PASO A gunman who opened fire at a shopping mall in El Paso on Saturday killed 20 people, according to Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas.
The police said that one suspect, a white male in his 20s, was in custody, and that the gunman had fired a rifle into the crowded store, sending panicked shoppers fleeing for their lives.
Several officials identified the gunman as Patrick Crusius, 21.
The gunfire on Saturday in El Paso began a few minutes before 11 a.m., in a popular commercial district near Cielo Vista Mall with scores of restaurants and stores that are often crowded on the weekends. The Walmart store, located near Hawkins Boulevard and Gateway Boulevard West a short distance from the mall, was packed at the time.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott said Saturday that 20 people had been killed in a shooting at a shopping center in El Paso. "We as a state unite in support of the victims and their family members," Abbott told reporters, calling it "one of the deadliest days in Texas history."
El Paso Police Department Chief Greg Allen said 26 people had been wounded in the attack. A white 21-year-old male suspect has been arrested, according to police.
Police are investigating whether a racist tirade posted online shortly before the shooting was written by the suspect. In the post, the writer complains about an influx of Hispanics that they said would replace aging white workers.
(snip)
Most of the victims were shot at a Walmart near the Cielo Vista Mall, according to police. Gomez said the Walmart was "at capacity" with between 1,000 to 3,000 shoppers at the time of the shooting on Saturday afternoon.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said three Mexicans were among those killed, and six were among the wounded.
