TENNESSEE LAWMAKERS CONSIDER BANNING ABORTION ONCE A WOMAN KNOWS SHE'S PREGNANT

Source: Newsweek

BY ALEXANDRA HUTZLER ON 8/12/19 AT 3:29 PM EDT

Tennessee lawmakers are considering a total ban on abortion by cutting off access to the procedure once a woman knows she's pregnant. If the legislation is passed, it will be one of the most restrictive abortion laws in the United States.

State senators will reconvene this week to discuss a "fetal heartbeat" bill, which would prohibit abortion as early as six weeks into pregnancy. The measure was passed by the House of Representatives in March but stalled in the Senate.

More than 20 witnesses from both sides of the abortion debate will testify on the issue before the state's judiciary committee on Monday and Tuesday. During the two-day session, the committee will also discuss an 11-page amendment to the original fetal heartbeat bill that includes a drastic change to the definition of fetal viability.

Under Roe v. Wade, the Constitution protects a woman's right to abortion prior to the viability of a fetus. The Supreme Court considered viability to be the point at which a fetus can survive on its own outside of the womb, which is usually between 24 to 28 weeks into pregnancy.

I guess women in Tennessee will have to walk into Planned Parenthood and say, "I'd like to get an abortion just in case I'm pregnant." Presumably this will be followed by a wink and a nudge.

I feel like we're all stuck in a surrealist version of the reality we knew prior to January 20, 2017. If what we perceive as reality truly is a Matrix-esque simulation, the programmers have a very sick sense of humor.

Or they'll have to take the morning after pill with their daily multivitamin.

Personally, I think the guy who gets the girl pregnant will have half his wages garnished for the next 18 years, with the money going to the woman. And every legislator who voted for the law will have the same obligation.

It was my first real exposure to frank discussions of birth control and abortion.

This was prior to Roe v. Wade and not long after women were allowed to obtain birth control without permission from their spouse or parents.

One of the things they advocated was that women basically evacuate themselves every month and gave explicit instructions on creating a vacuum setup with a jar and some tubing. I never used it and the newsletter is long gone from my collection of papers, so I don't remember much of the details.

I do remember thinking it was not a bad idea, especially since I was already experiencing difficulties with my periods. I was just not in a living situation where I had the privacy to try it.

Aha! The internet is a wonderful thing - here is an article about menstrual extraction with a set up like I remember:

https://www.womenshealthspecialists.org/self-help/menstrual-extraction/

If women who don't want a pregnancy and who are in places where abortion is no longer available did this every month, the anti-choice assholes would not be able to control their bodies.

How about making it mandatory in Tennessee for every man to wear a condom every time?

I got angry reading the headline. Take it off women. Make men, all men, legally responsible.

... and few women would need abortions.

But these anti-abortion people are really more into forced-birth... I don't think they want to prevent unwanted pregnancies, but rather force women to procreate.

only time a woman seeks an abortion is after she finds out she is pregnant.

Forced, involuntary neutering would be a good alternative for those weak fellas lacking good character and a strong will. Worked extremely well for my doggo; just sayin'.

Men keep blaming women after they get her pregnant. Maybe it's time they man up and take the responsibility they keep trying to foist off on women.

One damned thing we ask men to do, wear a fucking condom and here we are still in this mess.

It is ALL in our hands forever and ever always. From the moment of conception changing our bodies and our minds and our lives in huge ways and if we do not want it we pay the price then too. Abortion does not bother most of us women I don't think but it certainly does some women so there is that as well. Men can and do choose to walk away. They don't want anything to do with this leaving us with all the responsibility. Often broke and tired and sad that we cannot do better while they so often walk away. We ask you to take responsibility with ONE DAMNED THING and if you don't we pay big time with our lives because no matter how much you love or don't your children, you are in the game for life.

But but but it is not as sensitive with a condom on! Cry me a river, you think it isn't the same for us? We just don't want our lives taken away so you can have a little more sensitivity when you have sex.

Sorry, I am fine but this did effect my life long ago. I will carry it always even if the carrying is not sadness about the situation. Mostly it is anger that I had to deal all alone as a kid with this because, "Oh baby, it just does not feel as good. Just this once ok?"

Good lord, one would think that at some point the responsibility for one tiny part of this could be taken up like big boys.

Personally, I've always been happy with the responsibility in my hands, but I'm a control freak, I guess. If the result is me being pregnant, I don't want the control to be in some man's hands, I'll handle pregnancy, yes or no, thank you. If there is a pregnancy, I'll handle what happens to it, and the born baby if there is to be one. In fact, had I gotten accidentally pregnant and decided to have the baby, I can foresee circumstances where he would not even have known. My body, my baby.

If your proposed law sounds like it is a joke from the ONION or any other sarcasm dependent publication, THEN IT PROBABLY IS A STUPID LAW AND SHOULD NOT BE ENACTED.....thanks mz Lynn for the report, reminds me that my state isn't the only one with a stupid legislature.
