Trump: Jews Voting for Democrats Show Lack of Knowledge or Great Disloyalty
Source: The Jerusalem Post
US President, Donald Trump, said Tuesday that Jews who vote for Democrats "shows either total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty."
Asked by reporters about the Ilhan Omar-Rashid Tlaib saga, the President slammed the two for suggesting to cut aid for Israel. "I would not cut off to Israel, and I can't even believe we are having this conversation," he said. "five years ago, the concept of even talking about cutting off aid to Israel because of two people who hate Israel and hate Jewish people - I can't believe we are having this conversation. Where has the Democratic party gone?"
"Where have they gone where they are defending these two people over the state of Israel?" the President continued. "I think any Jewish people that vote for a democrat -- I think it shows either total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty."
He spoke about the joint press conference of the two Congresswomen and added: "You should see the horrible things that Tlaib said on Israel over the last couple of years. Omar is a disaster for Jewish people. I can't imagine if she has Jewish people in her district that they could possibly vote for her."

In response; "Jewish support for the Republican Party has been halved in the past four years."- Halie Soifer, Executive Director of Jewish Democratic Council of America
"This is yet another example of Donald Trump continuing to weaponize and politicize anti-Semitism. At a time when anti-Semitic incidents have increased -- due to the president's emboldening of white nationalism -- Trump is repeating an anti-Semitic trope. If this is about Israel, then Trump is repeating a dual loyalty claim, which is a form of anti-Semitism. If this is about Jews being "loyal" to him, then Trump needs a reality check. We live in a democracy, and Jewish support for the Republican Party has been halved in the past four years."

(3,051 posts)I'm Orthodox. My family are Orthodox. Some members of my family now live in Israel.
Many (or, rather "some" Orthodox consider the Democratic Party as incomparable with Jewish values, which generally line up on the right. They are also greatly distressed by tolerance of our party with some of the very poorly phrased statements of Omar, Tlaib, etc.
Anyway, I get the "Democrats are not good for the Jews" pronouncements enough from people I love.
I don't need it from the President.
I honestly suspect Ivanka (who is Jewish) and her family of being behind this kind of thinking.
Converts must be respected, as they are Jews-by-choice. But I have often found them more over-the-top in their beliefs than people born Jewish.

(16,829 posts)whether its blacks, jews, women, evangelical christians... there are all types.
My former Senator, Russ Feingold, always struck me as someone who had Jewish values. Not particularly religious (although his sister is a rabbi) but very ethical and someone who really loves the law. Someone who cares about disadvantaged groups. The Senate is poorer without him.

(3,051 posts)So I never really got to interact with Senator Feingold in any meaningful way.
I can say he was always prepared for meetings and would ask solid questions.
He was also very polite and considerate (which is a rarity among Senators, either party).

Feingold always read the bills he was voting on, even if it meant staying up all night to do so. He didn't rely on someone else's summary - that's how seriously he took being a legislator.

Nothing makes me feel safer than an anti-Semitic, authoritarian President telling American Jews that they are disloyal if they dont vote for him.

So, it is not anti-Semitic.
I, and many Jews, have heard this song before. We know all the lyrics (excuses). They aren't new to us. Attacking the loyalty of Jews for simply being Jews or using Israel as a measurement of Jewish loyalty, is anti-Semitic!
This song will get played again!

(16,076 posts)But he does have his defenders, who tell us what he meant!
"The Republican Jewish Coalition defended Trump, arguing that the president was speaking about people being disloyal to themselves rather than to Israel."
"President Trump is right, it shows a great deal of disloyalty to oneself to defend a party that protects/emboldens people that hate you for your religion," the group said in a tweet. "The @GOP, when rarely confronted w/anti-Semitism of elected members always acts swiftly and decisively to punish and remove."
The GOP punishes and removes...

(5,388 posts)Trump has a long list of groups within American society he feels require abusing.
This week, American Jews.
Next week, Hispanics.
Week after, African Americans.
Followed by women in general, women who are not a 10, pregnant women who want an abortion, people who dislike guns, the Fed, people who aren't rich, people who aren't white, Democrats, etc.
It's just an endless loop. Trump's way of winning friends and influencing people.
So, business as usual. Nothing to see here, move along folks.
Trump is living proof that some seeds deserve to fall on barren ground.
