Trump says the US wasn't involved in apparent launch pad explosion in Iran
Source: CNBC
President Donald Trump on Friday insisted that the U.S. had nothing to do with the apparent launch pad explosion of an Iranian rocket.
Trumps denial also included what looked to be an aerial photograph of the launch site, complete with graphics and annotations describing the scene.
A U.S. defense official told CNBC that the picture in Trumps tweet, which appeared to be a snapshot of a physical copy of the satellite image, was included in a Friday intelligence briefing. Experts told CNBC that the shot was likely never meant for public view.
The United States of America was not involved in the catastrophic accident during final launch preparations for the Safir SLV Launch at Semnan Launch Site One in Iran, Trump said in a tweet Friday afternoon.

(35,300 posts)1. Classification is on his authority. He didn't waive it, he still has it.
2. We've seen other such intelligence photos. When discussing possible nuclear sites in Syria, gas attacks in Syria; Cuba; etc., etc. It's not a surprise, and this may not be the highest resolution. People didn't question whether those could/should be released, but they were similar in type and kind.
3. The content of this photo was discussed widely, and, if it's the content that matters and not the image itself, it was released a day or three ago, more than 24 hours pre-tweet. Although I will say that the discussion I heard involved a description of the blue (oops, color!) paint on the launch pad and the extent and nature of the damage. Telling me that the information, if not the picture itself, was long since declassified, and it's likely that there is more detailed information, photographic or otherwise, lurking behind a classification.

(35,300 posts)And that this is, "There was test site that blew up but we didn't cause it, no siree, not us" in parallel with Iran's "There was a ship that blew up but we didn't cause it, no siree, not us."
Diplomatic? No. But so much isn't.

(394 posts)and I seriously doubt he followed that. He's such a moron, he can't even do simple things correclty because he doesn't think anything applies to him. The photo itself isn't exactly shocking in it's quality, Google Earth has better quality photos.

(93 posts)He is the highest classification authority. Everyone else's clearance ia derived from him. Presidents alone hold this power. Perhaps it might be wise to transfer part to the Gang of Eight.

(4,490 posts)Any declassification processes are determined by the President, which the President can choose to ignore, or eliminate, at any time. The only reason we didn't see similiar sudden pointless disclosures under other administrations is that every previous President in American history has been smarter and less petty than Donald Trump.
