Beto O'Rourke drops presidential bid
Source: Dallas Morning News
This is a developing story
WASHINGTON -- Beto ORourke announced Friday that he is dropping out of the Democratic presidential race.
He announced the move in an email to supporters, with no warning.
Though it is difficult to accept, it is clear to me now that this campaign does not have the means to move forward successfully, he wrote. My service to the country will not be as a candidate or as the nominee.

(149,595 posts)I always liked him, and I really admired his outspoken words on gun control, even though they probably contributed to his loss of support.

(25,852 posts)He never had a chance and he should run for the Senate in Texas next year.

(799 posts)I really like him and thought he was awesome when he ran against Ted Cruz but it was too soon for him to run for president. I hope he runs against Cornyn next year. Best of luck to you Beto!

(2,172 posts)He should have never came out for confiscating guns. That makes it harder for him in a place like Texas.

That would make it much more difficult for the Repugnants to attack him over it.

(10,098 posts)The whole campaign would be about it. As much as I love the guy, I do not think he has a chance if he would run. God, the things that have happened to this country. I actually remember a few Democrats winning statewide races in states like Texas and even my own state of Nebraska, which will probably never have a Democratic senator again in my lifetime.

(53,061 posts)For the record Beto was my favorite personal pick for Pres, just thought he needed a little more time.
For all practical purposes his confiscation plan for assault weapons eliminates the possibility of any TX statewide office in the future.
IMO he is better suited to getting a cable show on MSNBC or CNN

(1,242 posts)I am for banning guns altogether. The only way to eventually get there is to at a minimum put a toe in the water - even if it gets shot off. Nothing is going to change without someone standing up.

(11,594 posts)My late grandfather, who was a conservative on many issues, wanted a complete ban and destruction of all guns and a repeal of the Second Amendment. He was a sniper during WII and had an strong hatred for them after that experience. I don't favor a ban of all guns just the assault weapons. I admire that Beto had the guts to do this although it cost him politically. I'm sure the asshole who threatened him on Twitter will suffer no consequences at all.

(53,061 posts)Cruz is a faux Texan and frequently makes statements that are not consistent with Texas sensibilities. He can't even talk about hamburgers w/O making Texans cringe.

(6,852 posts)(not being deaf, dumb, and blind). But he surely does have name recognition, and in 74 years I have seen - not always, but not that seldom either - name recognition trump what the recognition is for. Not saying you're wrong, you're probably right, but I don't see it as a foregone conclusion either.

(646 posts)he's already said that multiple times. Which really aggravates me.
I know running is hard, but if you don't think you can beat Cornhole,
then why are you running for President?
I really like him, but I just think he should have tried again here in Texas.
Just my 2 cents.
I wonder what he'll do now. He's not a lawyer. Run their business again?
Speaker, write a book? Will be interesting to see.

Other than Kamala Harris and maybe Pete Buttigieg, I have zero interest in anyone who's left. What a letdown.

(10,123 posts)There is one area he could really help - even though he fell short before - if he could steal Cornyn's seat in Senate ....
This has probably been discussed and maybe there's already a resolution I'm not aware of ...

(7,408 posts)He doesnt want to lose back to back Senate runs. With Trump on the ticket hed lose to Cornyn probably 55-45.
I wonder if hes considered moving a few miles west to New Mexico, hed have a much more viable path to the Senate or Governor there.
