Trump makes it official: U.S. will withdraw from the Paris climate accord

Source: Washington Post

The Trump administration notified the international community Monday that it plans to officially withdraw from the Paris climate accord next fall, a move that will leave the world's second-largest emitter of greenhouse gases as the only nation to abandon the global effort to combat climate change. President Trump has long criticized the 2015 accord and insisted that the United States would exit it as soon as possible. As recently as last month, Trump called the agreement "a total disaster" and argued that the Obama administration's pledges to cut carbon emissions under the deal would have "hurt the competitiveness" of the United States.

In a statement Monday afternoon, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said the administration had sent official notification to the United Nations of its plans. "In international climate discussions, we will continue to offer a realistic and pragmatic model - backed by a record of real world results - showing innovation and open markets lead to greater prosperity, fewer emissions, and more secure sources of energy," Pompeo said. "We will continue to work with our global partners to enhance resilience to the impacts of climate change and prepare for and respond to natural disasters."

But environmental and public health activists quickly condemned the decision, even as it came as no surprise. "Abandoning the Paris Agreement is cruel to future generations, leaving the world less safe and productive," Andrew Steer, president of the World Resources Institute, said in a statement. "It also fails people in the United States, who will lose out on clean energy jobs, as other nations grab the competitive and technological advantages that the low-carbon future offers."

The Paris climate agreement legally entered into force Nov. 4, 2016, after the United States and other countries formally joined the landmark deal. But under rules set out by the United Nations, no country could leave the accord for three years, after which there is a one-year waiting period for the withdrawal to fully take effect.

U.S. will withdraw from Paris climate agreement, Trump administration says on first day it can give official notice

By Washington Post Staff
November 4, 2019 at 3:40 p.m. EST

President Trump has repeatedly criticized the 2015 international accord, in which world leaders vowed to collectively cut carbon emissions to combat climate change. The notice to the United Nations from the administration means that the White House can officially withdraw from the Paris agreement in one year, a move that would leave the United States as the only nation not backing the deal.

This is a developing story. It will be updated.

Assuming he loses the US is over if he wins), we could be back in as early as January 2021. The Democratic nominee can and SHOULD state that he will sign the US back in - maybe with an enhanced new commitment - the day he/she becomes President.

He earlier announced he would leave - but an American delegation has been at the various meetings. This time he is starting the process of leaving.

Fossil fuel stocks or maybe private investment in such companies. Another reason why he doesn't want his tax returns public. A few years ago the Pentagon said that climate change was the biggest threat to national security, and Trump does everything in his power to ensure greater consumption of such fuels, even suing the state of California over their strict emissions standards. So the question is, is Trump pulling out of the Paris agreement and setting policy simply to enrich himself? His love of fossil fuels makes me think so. Otherwise, it seems irrational to me.

to a non fossil fuel time when those revenue streams disappear. It may be a profitable company now, but I would not bet on it long term.

the way it was written (per the OP excerpt) - "no country could leave the accord for three years after which there is a one-year waiting period for the withdrawal to fully take effect."

So since Obama signed it in 2016, the 3 years would have been this year and then they would have to wait an additional year (until 2020) before the "exit" would go into effect.

Couldn't do it.

It was never legally binding, except in the eyes of other signatories who wanted it to be. It was a treaty signed by the president but never ratified.

As negotiated, it did not have to be ratified as a treaty in the US. This was intentional because there was no way to get that many votes on anything. In 2012, the Senate failed to pass a treaty on an international ADA agreement based on the US statute passed under GHWB even though former Senator Dole came to lobby for it.

We need to win, for this and for many other reasons. The new President then needs to join and to lead on this issue.

Like the corporate executives, who need their salaries (at 200x what their average worker makes). And don't forget the shareholders, who need an obscene return on their investment (in order to continue racking up their high scores... er, bank accounts).

Those are the people who really matter to Trump and those who think like him. The children of today who will suffer in a fucked-up world of tomorrow? Pfffft, sucks to be them. Their children and grandchildren, who will have things even worse? What is the future of humanity against purchasing your second yacht, or super-yacht? You gotta have priorities.

The short-sighted avarice of the few will be the destruction of the many. But hey, they'll be dead by then, so why should they care?
