KABUL An American and an Australian held hostage by the Taliban for the past three years were freed Tuesday just hours after insurgent commanders were also released, U.S. and Afghan officials said.
The exchange was announced last week by Afghan President Ashraf Ghani as a step toward restarting peace talks after they broke down in September, but the swap had been delayed for several days.
American Kevin King and Australian Timothy Weeks were instructors at the American University of Kabul when they were kidnapped in 2016.
Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said in a statement Tuesday that King and Weeks were in the care of the U.S. military and that they would soon be reunited with their families.
