Trump says he won't allow Navy to act against SEAL who posed with ISIS corpse

Source: NBC

President Donald Trump on Thursday said he will not allow the Navy to take away an emblem signifying membership in the elite SEALs unit from an officer convicted of posing with an teen ISIS fighter's corpse.

"The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin. This case was handled very badly from the beginning," the tweet read. "Get back to business!"

Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher was acquitted in July by a military jury of murder and war crimes but was found guilty of posing with the corpse of the teenage fighter for the Islamic State militant group.

Way to go, Trump.

Let's see how the Navy handles this. Gallagher should resign and leave the service. Failing that, I'm confident the sailors will act accordingly.

But this has been such a bizarre time, I would not discount the possibility of any outcome.
There was a great New Yorker cartoon, around Dec 2016 (unfortunately, I can't find it right now) that showed a guy in a downtown office, talking to a colleague at his desk, with a giant bird looming outside his window. The guy said to his colleague something like, "How I long for the days when something like this (the bird) would be the most bizarre thing that happened this year"
Hope we emerge from this Twilight Zone universe soon.

Trump Reverses Navy Decision to Oust Edward Gallagher From SEALs

The president said Chief Gallagher, who has been at center of a high-profile war crime case, would not lose his membership in the elite commando force.

By Dave Philipps
Nov. 21, 2019, 8:58 a.m. ET

President Trump on Thursday reversed a decision by the Navy seeking to oust Navy SEAL Chief Petty Officer Edward Gallagher from the elite commando force.

Chief Gallagher has been at the center of a high-profile war crime case and was granted clemency by the president on Friday. He was notified on Wednesday that the Navy planned to start the process to remove the Trident pin that symbolizes membership in the SEALs.

Less than 24 hours later, Mr. Trump announced on Twitter it would not happen, saying “The Navy will NOT be taking away Warfighter and Navy Seal Eddie Gallagher’s Trident Pin. This case was handled very badly from the beginning. Get back to business!”

Nothing wrong with giving a sailor a lawful order. However, if he is consistently given the shit details and prevented from advancing himself or his station, he can file an article 138 complaint with the IG. Given the very public nature of his career, you can bet the IG will investigate.

Now with that said, there are non official ways of handling things in the military. I don’t mean to make it sound as spooky as it does or condone such behavior, however, from my military experience, such things do happen. I’ll leave it at that.

On edit: I noticed the Army Star in your avatar. You probably know exactly what I’m talking about.

Since his acquittal, Gallagher has been a frequent critic of the Navy, particularly fellow SEALs who testified against him. He has described top SEAL commanders as "morons."

If Gallagher keeps shooting his mouth off, the Navy can file charges using:

Article 134. General article:
Though not specifically mentioned in this chapter, all disorders and neglects to the prejudice of good order and discipline in the armed forces, all conduct of a nature to bring discredit upon the armed forces, and crimes and offenses not capital, of which persons subject to this chapter may be guilty, shall be taken cognizance of by a general, special, or summary court-martial, according to the nature and degree of the offense, and shall be punished at the discretion of that court.

The punishment could be reduction in grade, forfeiture of pay for a specified amount, and suspend it for x number of months. And then they can sit his ass behind a desk...counting supplies!!!

.....Gallagher was ordered dropped in rank from chief to petty officer first class. But last week, Trump reversed the order, directing Gallagher's restoration as chief petty officer.

Trump's order was widely reported to have created a rift with the Navy, and Tuesday night, a defense official said the service would seek to strip Gallagher and three of his supervising officers of the gold eagle Trident emblem signifying that they are members of one of the Navy's elite Special Warfare Navy Sea, Air and Land units, known as SEALs.

Actually, he probably doesn't know what either term means. He definitely has no clue how important esprit de corp is in the military. Gallagher may be reinstated, but the other SEALs can shun him, and he still gets regular reports from his commander evaluating his performance. He should just drop out, write his book and go to RW conventions. Maybe Fox will hire him as a military expert.

...needs to be reassigned to the arms room for the remainder of his hitch. Since Trump has decided to exercise undue command influence in this case they can't kick him out of the SEALs, but there's nothing that says they have to keep him in a SEAL platoon. When the investigation comes, as it will, the commander simply has to utter the most powerful words in all the Navy: "we have lost confidence in his abilities."

They ALSO need to slap a bar to reenlistment on him.
