Seattle gets first go at coronavirus vaccine testing

Source: KUOW

The first clinical trials for a coronavirus vaccine will take place in Seattle. Kaiser Permanente said it received federal permission to start testing a vaccine developed in Boston.

Lead Kaiser researcher Dr. Lisa Jackson said the virus may become a seasonal problem like influenza, or it may disappear as SARS did years ago. However, she said “there is obviously a need for a vaccine and for treatments against this newly emerged virus so that is what we are working as rapidly as possible to accomplish.”

The initial trial will need 45 healthy adults. Jackson said that no research participants will be given a placebo.

People who are interested in participating can sign up online at corona.kpwashingtonresearch.org.

Any vaccine developed wouldn't be ready for at least a year.

8. That's absolutely not how it works. Phase 1 always tests new drugs or vaccines

on healthy younger volunteers. The whole point of Phase 1 testing is to see what the side effects are. That doesn't work if the subjects have underlying medical conditions. And if there are side effects, they don't want to accidentally kill someone, which is more likely with a fragile old person.

6. Don't think it'll be rushed. FDA has its rules and procedures that have to be followed.

they do a whole lot of good including providing millions in medical research, healthcare for underserved populations and even funding to alleviate homelessness. They've also been training staff and preparing to deal with infectious disease outbreaks for years.

I know no business is perfect and some may have had negative experiences, but on the whole, this is an organization with heart that goes out of their way to do the right things.

It's not like there's a vaccine about to be ready to test. It's more than a year away.
