Nebraska reports first case of coronavirus disease

Source: Omaha World Herald

By Julie Anderson

Nebraska has its first case of coronavirus disease — a 36-year-old Omaha woman who had traveled to the United Kingdom, Gov. Pete Ricketts said Friday.

The woman, who is "very seriously ill," is at Methodist Hospital in Omaha, officials said, and is being transferred to the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit on the University of Nebraska Medical Center campus.

The woman, who had traveled with her father to the United Kingdom from Feb. 18-27, became ill Feb. 25, said Dr. Robert Penn, an infectious disease specialist at Methodist. She returned to Omaha on Feb. 27. Her symptoms remained relatively mild until Thursday, he said. A chest CT scan has shown that the disease is evolving into acute respiratory distress syndrome, Penn said.

Dr. Gary Anthone, Nebraska's chief medical officer, said epidemiologists were arriving in Omaha to begin tracing the woman's movements and her contacts. Where she might have gone and with whom she might have been in contact were unclear.

know, the Tulsa/OKC area is a crossroads to just about everywhere. I-35, I-40 , I-240 all run through here. People stop to gas up, eat, spend the night, etc. Add to that, a fluid group of students at our universities, and it was never if, but when, we would begin seeing cases.
