Florida asks international travelers to quarantine for 14 days amid coronavirus fears
Source: Tampa Bay Times
Florida health officials are now recommending that anyone who travels internationally should quarantine themselves for 14 days upon their return, given concerns about the spread of coronavirus.
Of the 12 Floridians who tested positive for coronavirus in the state, eight had traveled abroad, according to the Department of Health. Two have died. One other person who traveled is also in self quarantine in Hillsborough County, state officials have said, but that person is a California resident.
Previously, international travel concerns were primarily focused on places with known outbreaks, including Italy, China, Iran and South Korea.
The Florida Department of Health is advising all individuals who have traveled internationally to self-isolate for 14 days following their date of return to the United States, health officials said in a Monday update.

(10,156 posts)you have a place where you can do it, namely a house or apartment. Visitors aren't going to pay all that money to travel to Florida just so they can pay for 2 weeks in a hotel room. Tourism everywhere is going to plummet.

(2,169 posts)I, if not most people, don't have enough food and supplies on hand, so they would need to go out to stock up. In the mean time they would take care of all the urgent matters they need to wrap up before a 14 day "quarantine". Thus totally negating the quarantine as you have already spread it everywhere if you have it. Let alone most people can't afford not to be working, especially if they've just been away.
Nice advice, but unless someone is going to assist those who need it (financially and logistically), it's just bullsh*t advice.

(43,288 posts)We have a public health crisis. You use the power of the State, or the states. Mandatory. Ankle bracelets and monitoring at home. The technology exists. Self-quarantine is leaky.

(6,856 posts)For now anyway. People can get groceries delivered. As usual, poor people will be the ones hurt the most. They likely dont have grocery money for hoarding and cant afford to miss 2 weeks.
We just told our staff that if they wish to self quarantine or need trip to doctor to rule out virus, we will extend sick leave and pick up go-pays. Unfortunately test devices not readily available

(6,601 posts)A lot of our economy depends on tourism & travel. Plus, we have a lot of older residents who retired here.
I think we're going to take a hit from this.

The move has also been interpreted domestically as a measure to avoid irking the countrys close ally and benefactor in Washington, Donald Trump. Israel already requires travelers arriving from more than a dozen countries to spend two weeks in home isolation, in effect killing off incoming tourism.
After outbreaks in the US, pressure had been building to add the country to the list. But rather than extending the rules specifically on US travelers, and risk an angry backlash from the White House, Israel broadened its policy out to the entire planet.
Netanyahu spoke to the US vice president, Mike Pence, on Sunday, after Israeli media reported the country was considering barring visitors from parts of the US, such as New York and California.
Health authorities have said the number of coronavirus cases in Israel jumped from 25 to 39 over the weekend. Approximately 80,000 Israelis are in self-isolation.
Italy today banned all public sporting events which surely is a first.
