Senate GOP Blocks Emergency Paid Sick Leave Bill From Moving Forward

Source: huff post

03/11/2020 01:34 pm ET Updated 0 minutes ago

The legislation put forth by Democrats would guarantee 14 days of paid leave for workers affected by the coronavirus outbreak.

Democrats hoping to pass an emergency paid sick leave bill to deal with the fallout from the coronavirus were stymied by Senate Republicans on Wednesday.

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) tried to speed the measure up for a vote on the Senate floor through a procedural maneuver, but an objection from Sen. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) prevented the bill from bypassing the Republican-controlled health committee.

Murray noted that many people who don’t have paid leave through their jobs will inevitably miss work due to being sick or quarantined in the coming weeks. She argued that guaranteed paid leave was important both for public health and the good of the broader economy.

“For many of our workers ― restaurant workers, truck drivers, service industry workers ― they may not have an option to take a day off without losing their pay or losing their job,” Murray said. “That’s not a choice we should be asking anyone to make in the United States in the 21st century.”

need to play by the same rule the Re pukes do and get in front of a camera every time they pass a bill and is rejected by the Senate. It is time to act like they are in charge and not keep sitting on the side lines letting them run all over them. The country need a strong party to stand up to the enemy which is the reason we won the majority. Everyone does not go online. Time to hold a press conference and do interviews on all that is going on behind the scenes and give prof. Trump stop the congressional trials and halt important people from testifying and get away with it , More should be said about our elections that they are trying to steal .The American people has a right to know what is going on.We can't win for losing, while they lose by winning.Do like they did when they marched in the investigating room and got in front of the camera with lies. Maybe you need someone like AOC to get out in front of this if you are too coward to do it.

Every Dem rep and senator should be in front of every camera they can get in front of, ranting and raving about his total failure of inaction/actions concerning the Virus and his continued efforts to cover up his gross incompetence. With this latest debacle, Trump has a target the size of planet earth painted on his fat ass................

THE key to Bill Clinton's success was every night when the Repubs shot off their mouths, a group of his worked all night to come up with counter ads that started airing the next morning. It performed magnificently to not only hit the repubs, but obliterated them. Time and time again, over and over they did this.......And it worked. Every time they were put on the defense, they immediately went to the offense with lightening speed.......Christ, at this point I can't even tell you who the head of the DNC is.......do we have one?.......
This is not a quiet game of chess, these Republicans have declared all out war from all fronts.
They are millimeters away from having their lifetime dream come true. A Corporate Fascist Tyranny. They have been working on this for FORTY YEARS, slowly chipping away at it from every angle. THEY WILL STOP AT NOTHING. Even without the Virus, the ugliness of the next months until the election are going to be something like we have never seen.

And someone said to me:, "Well,.... the Dems have written hundreds of bills"........and I ask, just how did that turn out for them? Will a few hundred MORE bills conclusively prove to the Dems that Mitch laughs and just throws them in the trash............

What's next??????? a "Sternly Worded Letter"..........

There are undeniably more democrats and democratic leaning independents than there are republicans. Moreover, the GOP remains an incredibly shrinking party and I say that with some sadness since my people were once jayhawking and then reformist republicans.

We need to vote and we will win. It is a numbers game.

Our Democratic governor, Gina Raimondo, has been excellent about communication and implementation of guidelines regarding COVID-19. She's been on TV daily with updates.

RI will suspend wait times for sick leave and unemployment benefits.
Employers are to pay employees - even hourly workers - for full sick time. (This is huge b/c RI has many, many hourly workers.)
Anyone with even the slightest illness should stay home.
No events with more than 250 people should be attended or scheduled.
Stores, businesses must make an effort to maintain distance between customers and workers.

At the moment, not making businesses or schools shut down unless there has been specific COVID exposure.

RI currently has 5 COVID patients.

They are still laboring under the illusion that the troubles they cause are all on the "others" they don't care about and not also applying to themselves. When sick people can't stay home, everybody is more at risk, including them. Morons.
