Trump to Declare National Emergency to Speed Virus Response

President Donald Trump plans to declare a national emergency on Friday over the coronavirus outbreak, invoking the Stafford Act to open the door to more federal aid for states and municipalities, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Trump is under increasing pressure to act as governors and mayors nationwide step up actions to mitigate the spread, closing schools and canceling public events. The president said he will hold a news conference at 3 p.m.

Declaring a national emergency will give Trump tremendous more power than he already has. He can ban internet sites and only keep up sites that are pro Trump. He can deploy troops to US streets. This national declaration emergency is not going to turn out well.

That goes all the way back to Carter. Declaring an emergency today gives Trump nothing he doesn't already have. It just specifies what purpose resources should be used on
