Gun sales surge as coronavirus grips US
Source: thehill
Gun sales throughout the country have surged as the coronavirus outbreak grips the U.S. Americans are flocking to gun stores and waiting in long lines as they worry about whats to come in the next few months with society all but shut down, the Los Angeles Times reported Monday.
Gun sales in the states most affected by the virus thus far, such as California, New York and Washington, are particularly on the rise. Consumers reportedly include both first-time buyers worried about the state of society and previous gun owners who are unsettled by the prospect of the government limiting gun purchases during the national emergency.
The increase in gun sales reportedly began several weeks ago, in states including Washington and California, where large numbers of Asian Americans purchased guns out of fear of the anti-Asian bias that has spiked amid the pandemic. But states with high numbers of coronavirus arent the only ones where residents are lining up for ammunition, with Oklahoma, Alabama, Wisconsin and Delaware experiencing increased sales and high demand, according to various reports.
Ammo.com reported a 68 percent increase in sales between Feb. 23 and March 4, when compared to the previous 11 days, USA Today reported. Gun control advocates have warned that the many nationwide school closures will lead to children and teenagers being in homes with unsecured guns.

(7,220 posts)I will say that living in very rural areas, I give (most) gun supporters something of a pass. We literally never see any kind of law enforcement where I live. No one goes on anyone's property without being specifically invited, because everyone knows that everyone else is armed. Hell, I leave my car and house unlocked at night, have for years. But, not being a gun supporter, right now I'm glad we have a few.

(1,849 posts)when the answer to every crisis, every crisis has one, universal, common occurrence. A spike in gun sales. WTF people? Seriously?
Buy a generator and some fuel instead.
Buy a years worth of survival rations, then put it somewhere safe.
Lots of more effective things to do with the $$ these nitwits blow on more firearms every news cycle.

(18,637 posts)Stopped into a sporting goods store today, daughter had to use the bathroom. It happens to also be the only store in the county that sells guns.
Plenty of ammo, looked like the usual amount of guns in stock and about 4 people shopping in that department- which is fairly typical

(12,712 posts)My picture of the US is that it is, under its facade of liberty/justice/etc. a rather violent culture and has been since its inception. We could consider the indigenous massacres and take aways at the start and everything in between.
That is why I am not at all surprised that, when things get ugly, Americans just take off the masks and the violent, angry and fearful face is more obvious.

Along with a rush on toilet paper, the coronavirus pandemic is also fuelling firearms and ammunition sales, says Wes Winkel, president of the Canadian Sporting Arms and Ammunition Association which represents manufacturers, distributors and retailers.
Were seeing an explosion of ammunition and gun sales over the weekend and even more so today, Winkel said Monday, adding that this is a typical reaction in these kind of uncertain times.
