Cuomo Doesn't Think New York Can 'Flatten the Curve'
Source: Political Wire
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D) said he doesnt believe New Yorks health care system will be able to meet the demand required by coronavirus patients, NPR reports.
Said Cuomo: I dont believe well be able to flatten the curve enough to meet the capacity of the health care system.
He repeatedly said the federal government will need to do more and said his administration is working with the National Guard and health officials to identify facilities that could be retrofitted to serve as hospitals, like dorms and old nursing homes.

I am sure Trump would let the state bring them up to code for nothing out of his pocket.

(9,651 posts)Wouldn't it be wonderful to see the steam coming out of his ears as his name went off the building and another name went up? They don't even need to change the name. Just occupy the building. I'd be so happy!
It would be the only time in the history of the world that anything that had to do with Trump would be used for a good purpose. But of course other people would have had to make it happen.

National emergency, don't you know.
In fact ALL Trump properties should be commandeered.

(449 posts)to turn into temp-hospitals. They already have built in food prep facilities and are designed to move people in and out. Also, many are somewhat out of the way, i.e. by airports. The fact that they have wi-fi and large panel TVs would allow love ones to connect to them.

(43,148 posts)I think they need to consider large spaces - gyms, auditoriums, conference rooms. There are dividers, you've all seen the pics from the 1918 epidemic, from China this year, large spaces many beds.
But I also worry the news is worse than they've been saying and they're breaking it to us slowly. Trump claims he's not responsible, Governors want Federal help, Trump says to buy direct.
World population is 4 times what it was in 1918. This pandemic is anywhere from 10 to 40 times more deadly. The numbers aren't pretty.

(13,485 posts)It's in the vacinity of the 1918 flu for deadliness, it's around 30x more deadly than the common flu. But nothing is certain.

that died, but estimates I've heard the last 2 days were twice the rate for this COVID-19.
So it's safe to say Corona is about twice as lethal, and may infect 2/3 of the population, twice the rate of 1918.
Twice as lethal, twice the rate of infection, four times the population as back then. Staggering catastrophe.
And you're right, nothing is certain. They still don't know enough about it. Today the new angle was some people feel pretty good but are carriers. Whoa. Or it could mutate, which could be good or bad. Suddenly state and local governments are mostly telling everyone to shelter in place.

(13,485 posts)The estimated deaths I've read for '18 are between 50 and 100 million depending on who is estimating. I had thought that would be a death rate of 7-14% by number of infected. Estimates, estimates it's all estimated, no real numbers.
It's all just wait and see I guess.

And imagine all the relatives wanting to see their loved ones. And questioning triage.
It's a sad situation ripe for despair.
