New Trump mileage standards to gut Obama climate effort

Source: The Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is poised to roll back ambitious Obama-era vehicle mileage standards and raise the ceiling on damaging fossil fuel emissions for years to come, gutting one of the United States' biggest efforts against climate change.

The Trump administration is expected to release a final rule Tuesday on mileage standards through 2026. The change — making good on the rollback after two years of Trump threatening and fighting states and a faction of automakers that opposed the move — waters down a tough Obama mileage standard that would have encouraged automakers to ramp up production of electric vehicles and more fuel-efficient gas and diesel vehicles.

2. Hopefully, people will consider consider mileage and emissions when buying a vehicle

Better mileage will save you money and visible emissions aren't aesthetically pleasing by any measure.

Implicitly, you allude to a market-based approach in which consumers self-select and make wise choices among options.

This selection or "wisdom" is predicated to a large extent on knowledge, attitudes, and values.

Those who know and understand the present and longer-term benefits of a cleaner earth, how efficiency reduces reliance on fossil fuels and foreign dependency, and actually saves them money on everything from fuel to health care, will opt for better mileage and lower emissions.

Those who are ignorant of or reject the above premises or, worse, just don't give a fuck and want the libs to eat their dust--the freedumb folks--will opt for less optimal choices.

Uninformed or uncaring consumer behavior is a central problem with a market-based approach. Too many people do not do the right thing.

5. Manufacturers follow these rules at their peril

I would suspect most people don't want them because they don't want to pay more for transportation, and poor mileage vehicles are worth less as the cycles of energy prices spike higher. So they are a poor investment for consumers, and a poor investment for manufacturers who are burdened with high fixed costs of production over a much lower vehicle production run.

So this stupid Trump policy is kind of self-correcting. He thinks he has all the power but he's just a big blowhard.

He is intent on undoing EVERYTHING Obama. THAT JOKE AT THE CORRESPONDENTS DINNER JUST KEEPS ON GIVING...

But that is a two-way street. We will undo everything initiated by the turd.

Remember, Richard Branson had lunch with him before the election. Richard was taken aback by him going on and on and on about how he was going to get revenge against those who "had done him wrong".

The turd is NOTHING but revenge. He takes JOY in "putting people in their places"...

When you are insecure, unintelligent and nothing but a spoiled brat, your LIFE consists of "putting people in their places".

HIS place is going to be in an orange jumpsuit, to match his sprayed on complexion.

IF we decide that accountability is needed to help us rebuild and get on with our grand experiment...

Hopefully Biden will have what it takes to do just that.

11. If US car makers want to sell cars, they need to continue with the Obama level requirements or beat

The Obama era standards have been there for over 7 years as they were from his first term. During that time, the car manufactures have worked to develop cars that more than met the standard. At this point, when Trump is a LAME DUCK PRESIDENT, as Mitch McConnell should agree , do you think that manufacturers will change their plans? At this point, they likely could not change plans before January.

The election will keep this change up in the air. Another reason - of many - we need to win.

It is because of California that we have any standards for cars at all.
I live in a red oil producing state and unfortunately, whatever good is done is done in spite of leaders and not because of them. i believe the science that shows conservatives and liberals process information differently. The conservatives in my family are trumpers. Fortunately, I don't see much of them and we don't have much in common except parents. I don't wish anyone any harm, it's just please go and be happy somewhere else and get the f out of the way.

15. Trying to Pump Up Oil Demand
Tue Mar 31, 2020, 11:55 AM
Mar 2020

The oil companies are in deep doo-doo now that the oil bench price has cratered after the OPEC+ collapse. Demand declines from automobiles is due to some extent from improved auto millage. This is about who controls the supply/demand curves; the big oil producers or the consumer. Little do they know how electric vehicles fit into the future. No one can stop that trend (or really predict it for that matter).

The problem we have as as we switch to electric cars is that oil demand won't keep up with supply development. Prices will go down and those who've invested heavily in oil production will be in trouble as oil companies suffer through declining revenue and stranded production/development costs. Look for more oil/gas bailouts from the government (like eliminating mpg requirements and buying more oil to put in the strategic reserve).

Creative destruction in action.

Considering that Trump's reign is short-lived, I doubt they would retool at a cost of hundreds of billions.

This is just Trump's political stunt for the knuckledragging deplorables.
