US company poised to start COVID-19 vaccine safety test

Source: AP

A second U.S. company is poised to begin a small safety test of a vaccine against the new coronavirus.

Inovio Pharmaceuticals said Monday that it has Food and Drug Administration permission for the study in 40 healthy volunteers in Philadelphia and Kansas City, Missouri.

The study is a first step to see if the vaccine appears safe enough for larger tests needed to prove whether it will protect. Even if the research goes well, it is expected to take over a year before any vaccine could be widely available.

Last month, the first safety test in people of a different vaccine candidate began in Seattle. It was developed by the National Institutes of Health and Moderna Inc.

But unless the results of testing are extraordinary the validation of this vaccine is still likely a year to a 18 months away.

There's at least 2 here plus the 7 that Bill Gates funded. I want whatever helps us return to normal life as soon as possible. I want social distancing to be a thing of the past.

Being a former Hep C patient I can tell you that plenty of cures and vaccines never make it to the finish line. Issues of toxicity, effectiveness, side effects, and long term changes to DNA make this a tough road. I’m hopeful that we will get there. Science is getting pretty good at stopping viruses.

And we will have technology dedicated to stopping this outbreak as well as the next one. That is of course, assuming competent leadership helps us!

But if the results are good and COVID resurges there'll be a lot of political pressure and posturing to do what's "right" and distribute it widely.

The greater the resurgence the greater the pressure and the bar will be lowered all the faster and lower. If the pressure is massive enough the bar will be embedded 20 feet under ground.

Of course, then it if fails the CT folk will get all whipped up and say that "they" knew all along it was bad for whatever reason and used it anyway.

Since this virus can be days before showing symptoms, can this cause the virus to be worse?
