Barr says Russia probe was started 'without basis'
Source: Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) Attorney General William Barr believes the Russia investigation that shadowed President Donald Trump for the first two years of his administration was started without any basis and amounted to an effort to sabotage the presidency, he said in an interview with Fox News Channel that aired Thursday.
Barr offered no support for his assertion that the FBI lacked a basis for opening the investigation and made no mention of the fact that the bureau began its probe after a Trump campaign adviser purported to have early knowledge that Russia had dirt on Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton.
Barr, who has appointed a U.S. Attorney to lead an investigation into the origins of the Russia probe, said the Justice Department has evidence there was something far more troubling than just mistakes during the investigation that eventually morphed into special counsel Robert Muellers probe.
I think the president has every right to be frustrated, because I think what happened to him was one of the greatest travesties in American history, Barr said in the interview with Fox News Channel's Laura Ingraham.

It seems like Barr is aiming to one-up Rudy Giuliani. Even scheduling meetings with Russian representatives to get dirt on an opponent or asking Russia hack an opponent is not enough to start an investigation?

(12,564 posts)Fat Donnie can't be celebrated as the greatest president ever if that damned asterisk is next to his name. By attacking the foundation of the impeachment they figure they can create so much doubt as to its origin that a case could be brought where the ultimately the SCOTUS would be asked to invalidate the entire case. If there's any doubt as to how the five conservatives would vote, just look at Wisconsin, where the Court decided that risking death is not a reason for getting an absentee ballot.

Rep. Jody Hice (R-Ga.) on Thursday called for an investigation into House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), citing his past rhetoric about President Trump and his family in the special counsel probe into Russian election meddling.
Isnt that the information that we need to know? Hice, who serves on the House Oversight and Reform Committee, told Hill.TV when asked whether he agreed with Trumps recent comments calling for Schiff to be forced out of office, and he suggested the California lawmaker may have committed a crime.
Lets find out, Hice continued. Lets open it up. Lets bring those people forward.

(12,564 posts)As it stands now, Trump's impeachment trial proved, there is no law, only what Fat Donnie decrees it to be. Witnesses and evidence presented during a trial? What an archaic concept. The Repugs were on board with that. Within an hour of Scalia's death, Moscow Mitch announced he would keep the SCOTUS seat empty until the 2016 election, but now he's taken the opposite position and says he'd rush through a Trump appointment during 2020 if Trump lost and a seat on the Court opened up. Constitutional oversight? Out the window! The Emoluments Clause? Who really cares if Trump uses the presidency to make a few bucks on the side? He's a businessman -- it's in his nature to make deals. Besides, he said he's forgoing his salary, so it all balances out, doesn't it?
As far as the SCOTUS goes, it's almost as if the concept of stare decisis has been totally thrown out by the conservative majority. In a recent case, Justice Sonia Sotomayor authored the blistering dissent and accused the courts conservatives of bias in favor of Trump.
Sotomayor said the administration has too quickly gone to the Supreme Court to appeal unfavorable decisions made by lower courts, and that by taking the cases, the Supreme Court is putting a thumb on the scale in favor of the president.
Claiming one emergency after another, the government has recently sought stays in an unprecedented number of cases, demanding immediate attention and consuming limited court resources in each, Sotomayor wrote. And with each successive application, of course, its cries of urgency ring increasingly hollow.
My post about the Repugs trying to annul the impeachment was written tongue-in-cheek. Of course you're right; the Constitution doesn't provide for annuling an impeachment. I would bet the Repugs would disagree -- what's a little annulment among friends?
I still wonder about Barr's end game; I wish I could figure out what he's up to, other than trying to rewrite history before Trump leaves office.

See, he'll spend a lot of time now leading up to his release of his latest investigation into what he's claimed all along is the phony basis not only of the Mueller probe but even any hint that the Russians lifted one tiny finger to help Trumpy. Then, after the release of that ginned-up report, he'll attempt to go national and blame the Democrats, Schiff, Pelosi and any I.G., State Department and any former President Obama appointee for creating the false narrative.
Heck, he'll blame Obama himself and obviously Joe Biden too. Just watch for Barr to open a US based Justice Department investigation into Joe himself, regardless of all the other Hunter Biden investigations to date that went nowhere.
Barr will stop at nothing to smear Joe to high heaven and not care a whit if any of it sticks.

"The judge's review of the Mueller report marks one of the most significant 'in camera' reviews in the history of the Freedom of Information Act," the advocacy group Electronic Protection Information Center, a plaintiff in the case, said.

<SNIP>
U.S. District Judge Reggie Walton of the District of Columbia had ordered the Justice Department to turn over the report, in a ruling that sharply criticized U.S. Attorney General William Barrs handling of the more than 400-page document. Walton said Barr displayed a lack of candor in his public rollout of the Mueller report, and the judge assailed the Justice Department leader for appearing to spin the Russia investigations findings in favor of President Trump.
The court has grave concerns about the objectivity of the process that preceded the public release of the redacted version of the Mueller Report and its impacts on the departments subsequent justifications that its redactions of the Mueller Report are authorized by the [Freedom of Information Act], Walton said in his 23-page ruling March 5.
Justice Department lawyers submitted the report Monday, only to have Walton note that he will not be able to review the unredacted version until at least April 20, in light of an order issued by Chief Judge Beryl Howell that drastically limited the courts operations amid the coronavirus crisis.
BuzzFeed News and the advocacy group Electronic Privacy Information Center (EPIC) filed the Freedom of Information Act lawsuits at the center of the case. The judges review of the Mueller report marks one of the most significant in camera reviews in the history of the Freedom of Information Act, the advocacy group said Monday in a statement.

(3,997 posts)many were given poor ratings by their peers and in some cases a non-recommendation (the exact words escape me right now) from state bar organizations and other lawyer rating agencies. In fact, If I read this right recently, Trump and McTurtle made such a sham of this that they totally ignored 'do not hire' recommendations by the score but also placed judges with zero or near zero courtroom experience, zero prosecutorial experience and even zero legal (opinion) writings.
So.....we may be able to fire a lot of these very young and highly inexperienced judges already on the bench by virtue of that lack of legal prowess. Won't be easy for sure but worth the try!
LTG
(215 posts)Legal experience, knowledge, prowess and recommendations are not requirements for the job. Likewise legal groups ratings of unqualified or protests to the appointment by state officials or state senators are not disqualifying.
Once the Senate considers the Presidents appointment and by vote confirms that person, I believe there remains only impeachment and removal for misdeeds by the House and Senate.
Realistically that is not very likely. Were most likely stuck with them for many decades.

Of course Barr did, and of course he did it on Ingraham's propaganda show. Barr makes no mention of obstruction of justice, which was the backbone of Mueller's report, which was unequivocally proven (with Trump's confessions!) 10 times over...Nixon was forced to resign just for contemplating. Or the Ukraine extortion scheme, which several GOP Senators admit happened but (except for Romney) didn't value their own integrity enough to act according to the law..Barr needs to go.

(9,958 posts)I hope historians will be able to explain this presidency, from questions about vote counts in places like Michigan and the possible stolen presidency to a true picture of Trumps illegal activities and how he has used the presidency to enrich himself and his whole family. We already know about a lot of his destructive policies, but we know very little about the foreign business deals his sons have make by trading on Trumps ability to give favors, like nuclear technology given to Saudi Arabia.
Barr knows Trump is corrupt, but he cares only about keeping Trump in office for four more years because he could then put probably two more Catholic rule-for-theocracy justices on the Supreme Court. If that happens, we are truly lost as a democratic republic and the only people whose rights will not be changed for the worse are ultra wealthy white people.
