WASHINGTON The Navy is looking into whether it can reinstate Capt. Brett E. Crozier, who was removed from command of the carrier Theodore Roosevelt after he pleaded for more help fighting a novel coronavirus outbreak aboard his ship, Defense Department officials said on Wednesday.
Adm. Michael M. Gilday, the chief of naval operations, has indicated that he may reinstate Captain Crozier, who is viewed as a hero by his crew for putting their lives above his career, officials said.
No final decisions have been made, Cmdr. Nate Christensen, a spokesman for the admiral, said in a statement to The Times on Wednesday. Commander Christensen added that Admiral Gilday was reviewing the findings of a preliminary investigation into the events surrounding Captain Croziers removal.
But Admiral Gildays decision could be upended by President Trump, who has not been shy about intervening in military personnel cases. Just five months ago, Mr. Trump fired Navy Secretary Richard V. Spencer for opposing the presidents intervention in support of a Navy SEAL accused of murdering a wounded captive with a hunting knife during a deployment to Iraq in 2017.

(562 posts)Eventually the ship will be heard immune I assume. There's like 600 now tested positive so they have been operating this way for a while.

(11,035 posts)God forbid that I should say anything nice about Squids but the Navy is built on discipline.
In the Army, it's a soldier's right to bitch, so long as s/he does it among peers. I assume the same rule applies in the Navy. However, mutiny is a serious offense under the UCMJ.
Article 94, UCMJ:
"A person who is found guilty of attempted mutiny, mutiny, sedition, or failure to suppress or report a mutiny or sedition shall be punished by death or such other punishment as a court-martial may direct."

(16,817 posts)I applaud the CNO for considering this, Capt Crozier should never have been removed in the first place. Trump, on the other hand, has no clue of military ethics and decorum and is the same degenerate who applauds a Navy Seal for freaking war crimes.

(7,134 posts)CNO resigns. BOOM!!
Hes got all his retirement points, so he will be OK. But a fierce kick to the shrunken jewels of that orange traitor.
Then lets see how many retired Navy vote for him. And for the GOP Congressmen who run cover for him.

(8,679 posts)The Military Commanders had better start standing up to him, other wise this nation is toast.
Starting with the Secretary of the Navy........Trump pardoning a rogue Navy Seal who murdered civilians, and then a Navy Captain in charge of an aircraft carrier (5000 sailors) who were getting a potentially fatal virus due to Trump's and the Republicon's willful and intentional inattention.
The moment has arrived where the entire military command better plant their feet and draw a line in the sand.

(3,469 posts)But if I was Captain Crozier no way in hell would I accept a reinstatement; not accepting that offer if it ever came would be a huge statement. Besides, why would anyone want to go back to work for that orange sh*t-throwing gibbon?!?

(843 posts)While the Navy may decide to reinstate him, do you really think Trump would ever allow it?
That would mean admitting he made a mistake. He will never, ever admit he was wrong. About anything. He is perfection after all, in his mind, "the man of all knowledge" and in total control with the ultimate say about everything.

(51,377 posts)"Why stop in Vietnam when there's a pandemic going on?" Trump kept saying. Well, maybe because Crozier was doing his JOB, something Trump would never understand. Besides, chances are the sailors were infected in the US, which has FAR more cases and deaths per 1 million population than Vietnam does. https://www.realclearpolitics.com/coronavirus/ You can't plame Vietnam for the 9 cases of Covid-19 on the US Hospital Ship Mercy, it's just been sitting in San Diego before it showed up sick in LA.

(11,080 posts)during which time the Commander-in-Chief will no doubt pitch a fit that anything happening aboard an aircraft carrier should lead to criticism of the Commander-in-Chief because as Commander-in-Chief he takes no responsibility for anything that happens in the military.

(7,498 posts)Relieving Capt. Crozier was not in the Navy's best interest, but are we screwing over someone else out of a promotion they thought they had?

(495 posts)But in this case, Capt. Crozier should have never been relieved to begin with. And any CO who gets a send off like this...you gotta get him back. We need positive signs and steps to maintain military morale.
