Trump pledges support for Postal Service after threatening its funding

Source: The Hill

President Trump on Friday said he would “never let our Post Office fail,” just hours after threatening to block emergency assistance for the U.S. Postal Service if the agency did not raise its prices.

“I will never let our Post Office fail. It has been mismanaged for years, especially since the advent of the internet and modern-day technology,” Trump tweeted. “The people that work there are great, and we’re going to keep them happy, healthy, and well!” The Washington Post reported Thursday that the Trump administration was considering leveraging a $10 billion loan to the Postal Service authorized in a coronavirus relief package in order to secure reforms.

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, who spoke alongside Trump in the Oval Office on Friday, said that the department would “put certain criteria for a postal reform program as part of the loan.” Mnuchin said he looked forward to seeing the board recruit a new postmaster general and executing on postal reform. Trump said he would “go a step further,” demanding the agency raise its prices in order to receive the emergency funding.

Trump earlier had called the Postal Service a “joke” and proposed that the agency should quadruple its current prices in order to make money. Trump said the agency was catering to companies like Amazon and losing money, and demanded that it raise its fees. “If they don’t raise the price of the service they give, which is a tremendous service, and they do a great job and the postal workers are fantastic — but this thing's losing billions of dollars,” Trump previously said.

I'm betting it was Jeff Bezos.

Frankly, I don't care. The USPS is a life-line for numerous Americans and it's irreplaceable. Let BIDEN help re-organize it next year to get it ship-shape.

Trump, don't fuck with it.

Just keep it funded. Dammit. Please.

If he reverses himself again, I'm going to have to buy more stamps!

It's going to be a long while before we can get out and block walk, and these days fewer and fewer people answer their phones when you phone bank.

When I can't reach someone by phone in my precinct lists, I write a postcard introducing myself and reminding them to vote, and ask for help in working my precinct.
I have Get Out The Vote postcards for October.

Many of our candidates had postcard parties in 2018 and they were very helpful for candidate recognition.

I also write postcards for https://postcardstovoters.org/

They send me info on upcoming campaigns that have requested their help. If I can send the cards, I reply back and then I receive a list of addresses to use.

The campaigns can be from just about anywhere. They have asked me to write for candidates in Alabama (Senator Doug Jones), Louisiana, Kentucky (Governor Beshear), North Carolina, Georgia and most recently Wisconsin on behalf of the new State Supreme Court Justice.

Definitely we need to have lots of postcard stamps

There is only ONE type of postcard stamp.

You can buy a roll of 100. I think I will check in with Tony the Democrat and see what's up. I feel the need to "do something". Maybe there is a post-card campaign to get campaign workers!

the private carriers contract with USPS for the final delivery in those areas.

My dad was career USPS in a very rural area. There were some really isolated places, even in a small county in Kentucky. Winding roads, houses in the middle of nowhere.. but the USPS gets the mail to them. Every state with wide open spaces and sparsely populated areas is the same.

It would cost a fortune for private carriers to serve these areas.

hatred of the USPS because Bezos is it's largest Customer until Election Cycles hit. Dipshit Donnie realized his Tea Billy Congressional Dick Wads have Franking Privilege which gives them access to free Campaign Mailings. Duh. And these Box Holders are worth in the Millions of Dollars. A 27 cent mailer in bulk would cost north of five dollars mailed by Fed Ex. Most likely 14-15 bucks a copy.

Hey Donny Littlehands! I know you're an expert on bankruptcy, but I also notice you never bring up the pension-funding requirement enacted upon the USPS by previous agents in America's spiraling decline. Is that because you're (a) ignorant, or (b) deceitful?

There is no (c) option.
