Republican lawmakers in Louisiana are taking extreme measures to try to end social distancing measures in their state.
Republican state lawmakers in Louisiana are trying to repeal Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards' public health emergency declaration in an effort to end social distancing measures in their state, an extreme move that would also end federal funding to help the state deal with the economic fallout from the coronavirus, the Baton Rouge Advocate reported Wednesday.
The move is part of a growing trend among GOP lawmakers across the country who are trying to undo coronavirus-related public safety measures implemented by Democratic governors before public health experts say it's safe.
Those Republican lawmakers are frustrated with the stay-at-home orders public health experts recommend to stop the spread of the coronavirus. The measures have decimated the economy, causing at least 30 million people to lose their jobs.
However, Louisiana's GOP-controlled Legislature is going a step further by trying to repeal the public health emergency altogether, even though more than 28,000 cases of the coronavirus have been reported in the state as well as more than 1,800 deaths, according to the Advocate.

(6,917 posts)Let them oppose Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards because hes adored by Democrats and makes Trump curry his favor, too. They are envious.
Take him on at great risk, he just won re-election five months ago and controlled the virus outbreak in Louisiana like the best of states. Hes tested more per capita, got executives of both parties to work in unison, and has done it with the support of ordinary La. Republicans and Democrats. Radical Republican lawmakers just want to play Governor. John Bel aint playing nothing, what he does is for real.
Which is a brand they can never recapturecredibility, political bravery, and fairness.

(3,626 posts)This effort is being driven by red-parish legislators who think they and their people are safe because they "aren't like" the hotspots of NOLA, Baton Rouge, and Bossier City. The problem is that the disease is coming for them too, they're just too stupid to see it, and as the virus burns itself down to a reasonable level of infections in the hotspots it will be spreading into the more rural areas which are more poory equipped with hospitals and first responders. Right now one of the places where it is still growing fast in LA is St. Tammany Parish, one of the most Republican "counties" in the US and home to a bunch of rich entitled shitheads who think rules are for other people and so they're holding parties and barbecues all over the place in violation of the order, Because They Can.
JBE gave a very thoughtful and well argued explanation of why he was extending the stay at home order until May 15, and of course these shitheads just think he's doing it to fuck them over. That's OK, I know ten people who almost certainly got the virus (including myself) and only two got tests and are recorded in the statistics. Before it's over everyone is going to know someone who died.
