Ohio governor says his face mask order went 'too far'
Source: MSN
Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine said Sunday that a statewide order mandating face masks be worn in stores went "too far."
"It became clear to me that that was just a bridge too far. People were not going to accept the government telling them what to do," he said on ABC's "This Week."
Appearing from Cedarville, Ohio, Dewine told Co-Anchor Martha Raddatz, "that was just one (order) that went too far."
While DeWine was one of the first governors to implement statewide closures amid the novel coronavirus outbreak -- closing schools on March 12 and postponing state primaries on March 17 -- he rescinded a statewide order on Tuesday requiring face masks be worn in stores, writing on Twitter that it became clear to him some Ohioans found it "offensive."
Despite cancelling the order, he still urged his constituents to wear masks.

This week, the governor announced a phased approach to reopening Ohio, allowing manufacturing and construction businesses to resume work Monday. On May 11, consumer and retail stores will also be allowed to reopen.

Can't come right out and say you know it really is a public safety issue and you will wear the mask.........
Hey Dewine I have fucking idea.......................why don't you have a instate poll to see how many want to endanger other people in the state.............lets see how many of your citizens have any empathy or no empathy for there neighbor...............instead of having some minority of idiots dictating the situation........and if they don't take the poll then that would be a yes.................Oh I forgot its a libertarian thing to do.................

Everyone agrees (or should agree) that there's a place for rules enforcing order or safety.

(326 posts)If people who are responsible, or vulnerable, say they will continue to shop at home and get deliveries rather than go to the stores even if they are open. I know of a lot who feel this way - if others cannot be concerned about the safety of their friends, neighbors or even strangers then sadly the shop owners will suffer from lack of patronage.

(32,626 posts)it makes me so angry to see people make a big deal out of it, when we've had massive protests across the country, that get No Ink, and No Television coverage. I doubt the people who are organizing and funding these protests, give a hoot about 'opening up the economy'. What is being opened up? Does anyone ask these people what job they're going back to?

(25,603 posts)I spent a week trying to make one.
You couldn't buy any supplies, anywhere. I went to Walmart to buy supplies to make masks, they were completely out. Elastic was on back order.
I ended up ordering the three last burkas on Amazon. (Yep even burkas were hoarded)
I saw no-sew masks, but those will fray if you machine wash them. (And Fray Check wasn't available either)
I saw blue paper towel masks. (Those masks have harmful particles) Masks with vacuum and AC filters are not safe either. I tried the bandana one, but couldn't breathe. Also, it literally popped off my ears.
Finally a friend made one. She made about 50, then she ran out of elastic, then she couldn't find any.
Now you can buy them, but gosh I spent a week on the mask stuff, until finally my friend made them.

If the government can not govern then what are we wasting all their salaries on. Lets just bulldoze the capitol buildings and build something useful like a Starbucks.

(9,898 posts)People will only stay inside and wear masks as long as they agree to do so. The longer this goes on the more people are going to decide they've had enough. If everyone decides to go out, there's not a lot anybody's going to be able do about it that would be acceptable to most Americans. I feel as if the governors are aware of this. I live in PA and there has been a lot of backing off in my state and those nearby from the original pronouncements about what would have to happen in order to get back to business. For example, they all said there would have to be widespread testing. Yet testing has not really changed as we start to open up.

(2,577 posts)He was doing a great job--maybe too good. Ohio really flattened the curve, so the great (?) minds said, Hey, this isn't that serious. This is is inconvenient! Boo! And masks make me look funny.
I have noticed more and more people around taking things less and less seriously--won't affect me! I'm not old! I'm not poor!
DeWine was standing against the Rube-publican party here in Ohio. His own party is making his life miserable--legislation will be introduced tomorrow to limit his powers and limit the powers of Amy Acton, Director of Health. I saw today that armed thugs were protesting in front of her home. Just special.
I am terrified that we will see what life is like when the curve is NOT flattened.

It's mandatory masks all the time here and we've had no deaths & no new cases for about 3 weeks. The ones who did have it have recovered.
I's a small Island but our Gov took it seriously from the beginning and look where we are now. Stay at home is now through May.
