Texas Supreme Court orders jailed salon owner released
Source: Austin American-Statesman
The Texas Supreme Court on Thursday ordered Dallas County officials to free salon owner Shelley Luther from jail while its nine judges, all Republicans, weigh an appeal challenging her incarceration as improper.
The emergency order directed county officials to release Luther on a personal bond, with no money required, pending final disposition of her case.
County officials also were ordered to file a response to the challenge by 4 p.m. Monday, the same day Luthers weeklong sentence for contempt of court would have ended.
The order came shortly after Gov. Greg Abbott, seeking to end a political firestorm over Luthers jailing, announced Thursday that local officials will be prohibited from jailing Texans for violating any of his numerous coronavirus-related executive orders.

(157 posts)She told the judge she had to remain open to feed her family and keep her staff from starving. But they have food banks in Dallas! I guess it makes more sense to endanger peoples lives than to go to a food bank like everyone else in that situation.

(6,931 posts)Might have received $3400.00 give or take just a couple of weeks ago. It would be interesting to see what she's given her staff to keep them from "starving". Many times in those salons the others working there actually work for themselves and pay rent for their stall.

(11,605 posts)But she should be disgorged of all of her profits from the days she was open illegally. I think the judge played right into the hands of the right wing by sentencing her to jail. It's what she wanted.
