One-fifth of Americans fear they can't pay June rent or mortgage, federal survey finds

Source: LA Times

More than half of California households have seen a loss of income due to the coronavirus pandemic, the U.S. Census Bureau said Wednesday, based on a newly launched weekly survey.

Since March 13, 54.5% of California adults surveyed said they or another adult in their home had lost income, and an additional 40.8% expected their households to earn less from work over the next four weeks.

Nationally, more than a fifth of adults surveyed reported they had slight or no confidence in their ability to pay their rent or mortgage in June.

The findings come from the first release of data from a new weekly survey conducted by the bureau to try to gauge how the outbreak is affecting Americans. The 50-question survey asked about food security, ability to pay rent, access to a computer for school work and anxiety levels.

They know that, while people's fears of an unseen virus may be great, their fears of winding up on the street are even greater, because they're easier to imagine. Keep up that fear, and eventually people will reluctantly demand that their state "re-open" despite the danger, so that they can get the paycheck that provides food and shelter. They'll just "whistle past the graveyard," and hope that the virus passes their workplace by.

will be back to work by September. Many of those jobs are gone forever.

Without continued, meaningful relief spending by Congress, we are looking at evictions, homelessness and starvation on a massive scale.

whats wrong with the masses eating cake, while #Moscow Mitch draws a paycheck of over $18,725.00 a month off the taxpayers ..................and over close to 40 million slobs are only getting, like my wife 3600.00 a month in state and federal unemployment, and when the federal runs out in June...............which brings her down to 1600 a month...................lets party.............. ......and then to add further insult to the abject failure from a asshole that failed in his responsibilities and said the virus was Hoax,
That somewhere in his narcissistic lunatic mind that some virus fairy was going to show up and make it all disappear, while he's eating a anti-malaria drug, but he is going to show up at a Ford plant in Michigan, without a mask or glove and thinking about the photo-op and then working his way back unto the links at the taxpayers expense said that he is reluctance to the House bill called the HEROES ACT to sign.................and then to add further insult........... #Moscow Mitch has bill that was passed by the House on his desk called......The HEROES ACT, that will extend unemployment and help get rid of some student debt and help the masses , but nope the country gets 1 week off......................
