When State Department inspector general Steve Linick was abruptly fired, one of the inquiries he was conducting concerned a massive, highly controversial weapons sale to Saudi Arabia. Now the Trump administration is preparing to sell Riyadh even more weapons, The Daily Beast has learned.
Two individuals familiar with the situation, including one with direct knowledge, said the Trump administration is drafting another request for a significantly smaller package of arms that includes precision-guided munitions similar to those Secretary of State Mike Pompeo approved in a highly contentious $8 billion sale in 2019.
Congress voted to condemn that sale, and is likely to strongly push back against a new one, too. The proposed sale comes less than two weeks after President Donald Trump fired Linick.
The prospective sale also demonstrates the entrenchment of the Trump administrations bond with Saudi Arabia, right as Riyadhs punishing war in Yemen and the grisly murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi has severely eroded Congress trust in the Saudis.

(16,254 posts)If there is a way, never think those two won't take advantage of it.
Pretty damned sad that the first thought that hits your mind with a situation and administration like this is, "What percentage will Trump and Pompeo get?" Ideally, Trump wouldn't have to give Pompeo a cut, but it would probably be worth it to keep his mouth shut.
After all, they both could be losing their jobs before long. Just sayin'.

(9,981 posts)Pompeo is an Iran hawk, so likely sees arming Saudi Arabia as a means of overturning Irans government. And of course Israel would help with that.
And, yes, its sad that the first thought many of us have with any new policy or announcement by Trump is to wonder how it enriches him or his family. Thats always the motive with a grifter.

In a non-COVID world, the biggest news right now would be that Al Qaeda was involved in the first foreign-planned terrorist attack on U.S. soil since 9/11.
1/ Heres what we know and why we need to be demanding accountability from the Trump Administration.

2/ Last Dec. 6th, Saeed Alshamrani, a Saudi Air Force cadet, killed 3 and injured 8 at a military base in Florida.
He had been in contact w AQAP, the Al Qaeda wing based in Yemen, since 2015, including the night before the attack.
AQAP says it directed the attack.

3/ He joined the Saudi military specifically to carry out an an attack on the United States. He spent years planning the attack.
And the FBI found over a dozen other Saudi trainees at the same base with jihadist and anti-U.S. material on their computers.
