Defying Trump, Twitter Doubles Down on Labeling Tweets
Source: NYT
Twitter on Thursday added new fact-checking labels to hundreds of tweets, even as the Trump administration prepared an executive order to curtail the legal protections that shield social media companies from liability for the content posted on their platforms.

But Twitter has doubled down. Early Thursday, it added fact-checking labels to messages from Zhao Lijian, a spokesman for Chinas foreign ministry who had claimed that the coronavirus outbreak may have begun in the United States and been brought to China by the U.S. military.
Twitter also added notices on hundreds of tweets that falsely claimed a photo of a man in a red baseball cap was Derek Chauvin, an officer involved in the death of George Floyd, an African-American man who died this week after being handcuffed and pinned to the ground by police. The Twitter label alerted viewers that the image was manipulated media.

A Twitter spokeswoman said that the tweets modified on Thursday contained potentially misleading content and that the fact-checking was consistent with the companys approach this month. In a series of tweets on Wednesday, Jack Dorsey, Twitters chief executive, also said he would not back down from the fact-checking effort. Well continue to point out incorrect or disputed information, he wrote.

Now I just can't support that asshole by clicking on the website. It's actually not that difficult. It's installed on my desktop computer in the basement and now that I have a laptop (upstairs!) that does NOT have FB loaded, I am freed from bondage! Plus when my old cell phone died a few years ago, I didn't install it on my new phone. TA-DAAA!

(1,602 posts)Zuckerberg's been watching a not so slow hemorrhage from Facebook for some time now, first because of the migration of GenZers to Instagram and from there to Snapchat, and then migration of professionals to Linked In. Of course, that also gives Trump a considerably smaller "audience" that are already somewhat self-selected.

(43,157 posts)you have to know he understands the role of facts and truth in every type of communication, and every company or profession that relies on facts or truth in its business. Courts, sports, journalism, politics ... we are in deep propaganda if facts and truth become totally fluid and unreliable.
"Do you swear to tell all lies, and nothing but lies?"
Imagine a sporting event where every player wore someone else's jersey and number.
Judges and juries are baffled, capricious, unreliable, and worthless if no one tells the truth.
Drumpf is going deep Goebbels here. You can't regulate truth and balance any more than you can morality. This EO is attempting to force Fox News standards onto social media. It must be an epic fail, and very very soon. Court cases predicted.

(43,157 posts)The whole point being, you don't follow the rules when distorting reality to suit your own agenda. Refs no longer enforce that rule in this hypothetical. Truth, logic, facts, rules, convention have been abandoned.

(11,949 posts)Assuming all his wealth is not tied into Twitter stock, why not just shut the whole thing down?
Put out a statement that he will not run a Private company that A fascist president is trying to control. Say he will restart it when we have legitimate government.
Then pull the big Off lever. Trump would have a coronary if there was no Twitter.
He still owns the name. Yeah, other sites will try to monopolize the game but it will be scattered. Then restart it when we have a legitimate president.
Obviously, while doing well, I dont think like a billionaire!
