US ranked among worst countries to raise a family, study says

Source: New York Post

We get an “F” for family.

In case you thought America wasn’t experiencing enough turmoil of late, the United States has been named the second-worst wealthy nation in which to raise a family in 2020, according to new research by travel site Asher & Lyric.

Just a stunning study. There was a time when an argument could be made America may be the best country in the developed world. But the fact is we are almost in last place only behind mexico. What a fall.

The red-white-and-blue came in dead last in terms of time — which the RAFI gauged by maternity leave, vacation days and other factors — and cost, as measured by out-of-pocket health spending, cost of living, income ratio and more.

And look what the average family here spends on childcare...gulp...

The study noted that the US is the only country that doesn’t require employers to offer maternity leave. Even worse, the average household blows 31.79% of their income on child care compared to the 4 to 10% spent by Scandinavian nations.

I have been fortunate enough to travel to a few parts in Europe in recent years, and the European cities I’ve been to accommodate cars but are built for people. We build cities for cars not people (narrow lanes to cram as many cars as possible on the streets, skinny sidewalks, few public spaces and green spaces). With one exception, the cities I’ve been to have been clean and easy to navigate with public transportation, which in most cities is extensive and also clean (I shudder to remember the dirt and the critters in the New York and Boston subways, along with their ancient infrastructure.

We invest in making the wealthy wealthier and big business even bigger so they can monopolize markets. Europe invests in their cities and people. I appreciate a lot about the US, including its beauty in many areas, but it would be nice if we could change our focus toward fulfilling people’s needs instead of making the rich richer.

propagandized and demented voters, along with the naive, gullible ... plus religious wackos. And now tRump is trying to command forces in the US to fully control the nation ... and likely disrupting the vote in November. The way it's going, the US will eventually be off the radar as the worst ... and the demented will still believe/cheer best place to live in the world. The US, thanks to tRump and his cult herd, is in some seriously deep shit.

in the whole fucking world! Without that singular distinction of bloated manliness, we could have lots of nice stuff to improve the lives of every person in the country. How many bullets can we forego purchasing to fund universal child care services, preschool education and the family leave act?

Can we do without some bombers to pay for universal healthcare services? Do we really need every single military base around the world, or can some of that funding be used for higher education grants and scholarships, and skilled job training?

How many nuclear missiles can be retired in order to pay for job education and journeyman programs to train workers for the skills needed in new green businesses? How many manned fighter jets are needed in this era of armed drones? That one change would free up tons of money that could be appropriated for massive infrastructure projects to create good paying jobs and replace our old, outdated and costly public facilities!

And the people of this country pretty much went along with it with no real pushback.

To see it required some reasonable ability at critical thought and that was one of the first things to go.

They've succeeded in creating 3 Americas. A really first rate one for the rich. One for the upper middle class made mostly of smoke and mirrors. And a truly horrible one for everyone else. The preferred method? Fear and hate. Divide Americans with fear of other Americans. Conquer the south by pandering to racists. Stoke the inner Pharisee in the devoutly religious. And with a constant stream of propaganda, they've divide Americans who in reality have far more in common with each other than they do with the wealthy or their Rethuglican henchmen.

This is exactly what the GOP wants...they should be rejoicing (killing and bankrupting the average American has been their goal for 40 years, at least). Since the average American in no longer 100% white maybe future voters will be able to change our course, but I doubt it...at least in my lifetime.

Diet is a big part of that. Thanks to Michelle Obama, Alice Waters, Jamie Oliver and everyone who works to get children eating better -- real food, not processed chemicals.

The other day I saw an episode of Top Chef where the chefs took a taste test. Most of them only got a few right. The yoga-vegetarian did the best. That evening at the house they held their own junk food taste challenge. The two contestants did very well. Not only did they know one was a hamburger, they knew it was a Whopper.

Some years ago a news reporter asked a group of children what their favorite food was, and it shocked me that they specified brand names. It wasn't "I like pizza," it was "I like Domino's pizza." Not "I like fried chicken," "I like Kentucky Fried Chicken nuggets." Sad.

but the "fiscal conservative" policy of cheating labor that has pretty much been in place and escalating since 1969 has kept us where the rest of the developed world was during the Depression.

Articles like this one should be all over the major media, headlined once an hour. They never are.
