Another big event starts up in South Dakota as infections from Sturgis motorcycle rally rise

Source: ABC News

The South Dakota State Fair opens Thursday and will run through Sept. 7. While it's not clear how many people plan to attend this year's event, more than 200,000 people visited the fair last year, according to the state's department of agriculture.

<snip>

"Exposure to COVID-19 is an inherent risk in any public location where people are present," according to the fair website. "By visiting the South Dakota State Fairgrounds, you voluntarily assume all risks related to exposure to COVID-19."

The state fair comes on the heels of last month's Sturgis motorcycle rally, which was attended by hundreds of thousands of people. At least 290 people in 12 states who attended the rally have tested positive for COVID-19, according to The Associated Press. A man from Minnesota who attended the rally has died.

Republican Gov. Kristi Noem supported holding the rally in her state. "We are not -- and WILL not -- be the subjects of an elite class of so-called experts," she tweeted in August. "We the People are the government."

Testing in South Dakota is currently showing about a 15% positive rate, which suggests that there's not enough tests being performed to catch all the cases.

Yeah, those egghead scientists are just all about disrespecting the proud Americans who dropped out of community college without ever even seeing a science text.

The stupid, it seriously hurts.

she was worthless in the Senate and shes worthless as a Governor. She will hold that office for as long as she wants it since in SD if you are a repuke you are pretty much guaranteed to be voted in. its redder than red and corrupt as hell. I hated living there.

I know this is a contrarian view here, but we take risks doing anything. And Sturgis has been over for more than 2 weeks & 290 isnt much of a number. I really thought we'd see 2-3000 or more.
Same with the Wisconsin primary; 1.5 million voted & how many cases were ever connected to that? 100? Likely because everyone I saw voting wore a mask.
This stuff isnt going away; we're going to have to realize that we have to be vigilant all the time for the foreseeable future. But we also cant stop doing stuff. its bad for your MENTAL health.

something called a "LAG TIME". Remember that ALOT of the blockhead idjits went to Sturgis, in the MIDDLE OF A DEADLY PANDEMIC caused by LEVEL 4 NOVEL PATHOGEN & based on the ever increasing number strains, a VERY promiscuous RNA virus with shifting antigens, meaning that with every new infection, the virus changes it's surface proteins, which makes it, IMHO, IMPOSSIBLE to get an actual, safe & EFFECTIVE vaccine to pop up out of the ether by Nov 1st.

Pair that with the ACTUALITY that alot of ME's, labs & hospitals are either NOT reporting the ACTUAL number of SARS 2/CoV19 &/or straight up LYING about what is causing all the deaths. Just give it some time. TRUST ME ON THIS....

"If anything, theres temptation to inflate the numbers of admissions because they'll get more money for Covid related cases."

You just spewed a HUGE rwnj LIE.

That is completely false. CNN just had a dr on from Ames IA that dispelled this myth and was quite insulted that someone would claim this. Maybe someone more post savvy can find the clip, but they just covered this a couple hours ago.

I believe the conclusion was 24 additional positives in Wisconsin due to voting in the April primary. No known deaths. I take COVID seriously, but the hype on social media, MSNBC, etc. at times makes me shake my head.

The OpenWisconsin right-wing rally at the end of April ended up spread-free despite the claims of many that several multiple Republican deaths would occur.

Incredible, South Dakota is now the #1 hot spot in number of recent cases per capita

Daily new cases, PER 100,000, 7 day moving average,
#1 South Dakota
#2 Iowa - another close neighbor of SoDak
#3 North Dakota
...

https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2020/us/coronavirus-us-cases.html

Scroll down to the "Cases and deaths by state and county" table.
Sort it by the "per 100,000" column that follows the "cases in last 7 days" column

And all 3 states are sharply rising as seen by the little maps of each and every state near the top of the page

are primarily due to 3 major colleges reopening and the party culture of the students...huge outbreaks at U of I, ISU and UNI. At least the Governor here shut the bars down again in the counties surrounding the schools. She really needs to implement a statewide mask mandate, but that wont happen cause she wii upset her orange overlord.

Iowa isn't the only state with party colleges. I'm not sure where you're at but outside of a few larger towns you won't see a single person socially distancing or wearing a mask. This state has become a dump. How do you go from overwhelmingly supporting Obama and having one of the most liberal Senators to putting in Joni Ernst and becoming the heart of Trump country? It's sad and pathetic.

I travel the entire state for work, and I see about 50/50 mask vs no mask, but first hand accounts of bars being filled to capacity during move in week is when the numbers started to spike again. Remember, we were the state that kept sending that POS King to Congress every election. Ernst, Reynolds, all beholden to tRump. A big part of it I blame on all the AM stations that run RW radio all day long along with faux. I also see a lot of racism in this state mainly in the rural areas...lots of Confederate flags flying around.
I dont think theres a single answer why there are do many cultists here, but I'm hoping the larger cities come through and cancel out the rural vote. There are more of us than them, we just need to GOTV.

I posted news about the rally in Latest Breaking News earlier in August.

The moderators locked the topic because it wasn't news of National interest.

The story in the OP is interesting, but not interesting on a national level.

If you post in the South Dakota forum, people will continue to be able to see just how fu*ked up the South Dakota GOP and S.D. GOP voters are.

On edit: Here's the rule from the Statement of Purpose of the LBN forum:

Post the latest news from reputable mainstream news websites and blogs. Important news of national interest only.
