124 Michigan State University students test positive for COVID-19

Source: ClickOnDetroit.com (WDIV Detroit)

EAST LANSING, Mich. – In just over a week, 124 Michigan State University students have tested positive for coronavirus (COVID-19), the university announced Wednesday.

Officials do not believe the cases are linked to one particular event, but rather are connected to multiple large student gatherings taking place in East Lansing. All 124 students who tested positive for the virus live off campus, according to officials.

“This increase in positive cases among students is disappointing, but not unexpected,” said President Samuel L. Stanley Jr., M.D. “As students return to off-campus housing, some are attending large gatherings where people are in close contact without an appropriate face covering. This is the easiest and fastest way for the coronavirus to spread.

“This spike in cases should serve as a wake-up call to our community about the importance of personal responsibility and following health guidelines. Please, avoid large gatherings, wear a face covering, practice physical distancing and wash your hands frequently. We all share the responsibility to keep ourselves and our community safe. I hope that all students who are infected make full recoveries,” Stanley added.

At Least 35K Coronavirus Cases Reported at Colleges as Students Return

By Katy Smyser and Phil Rogers • Published September 7, 2020 • Updated on September 7, 2020 at 11:17 am

At least 35,000 cases of coronavirus have been reported at 176 colleges and universities in recent weeks as students return to campuses while the pandemic rages on.

NBC 5 Investigates is tracking cases at more than 200 colleges and universities - all of the schools in Illinois, more than 50 out-of-state schools most attended by Illinois students, more than 50 of the largest universities in the U.S. and more than 30 of the country's largest historically black colleges and universities.

Those schools include many that don't appear to report their cases online - meaning the true total number of cases may be higher - and many where classes haven't started or began barely one week ago.

It know it is missing a bunch including my alma mater UMASS (and admit that what they gathered so far is a huge under-count), but when I checked UMASS's site, they had already decided back in June to go all-virtual for the fall semester (except for some required "research" classes - I'm assuming they mean "lab" ), and only show less than a couple dozen positives among students and staff (which is miraculous given the school's nickname - "ZooMASS" ).
