COVID-19 infections leap again at University of Georgia
Source: ABC News
ATLANTA -- Coronavirus infections continue to spread at the University of Georgia, with the school reporting more than 1,400 new cases of COVID-19 in the past week.
The numbers, reported Wednesday, push the 39,000-student university close to 2,600 total infections in the past four weeks, according to the school's data. Although Georgia College & State University still has recorded a larger share of infections among its campus community since Aug. 1, UGA's outbreak is now the fastest growing among universities in the state that are publicly reporting numbers.
The surge is clearly reflected in the figures for the broader Athens-Clarke County community. Clarke County is 23rd among U.S. counties for the most new cases per capita in the past 14 days, according to figures kept by The Associated Press, although the university says some tests may come from students and employees elsewhere.
And a rising positivity rate suggests things could be getting worse, with 8% of surveillance tests conducted to keep an eye on the spread of the virus coming back positive last week, compared to 5% the week before.

Few staff have received positive asymptomatic test results. The vast majority are students. The UGA VetMed School is doing COVID19 vaccine research and development. Part of the process is the ongoing testing of asymptomatic students, staff & faculty.
I know someone on UGA staff who is getting tested every week because she has direct contact with students in the dining halls.
Athens-Clarke County has one of the highest poverty rates in the US (over 30% - a large black and brown population of essential workers). Thankfully, our public schools are 100% online.
The insanity of it all is making me crazy. Kemp and The University System of Georgia are planning on UGA holding football games, including the GA-FL game in Jacksonville, FL!
Its all about money (tuition and student fees & football money) and kissing MF45s ass.
A group of bar owners (who all live in adjacent rich, white Oconee County) sued A-CC because A-CC mandated bar closing at 10pm. Its been changed to 11:30pm by the judge in the case.
KKKEMP mandated that restaurants and bars could reopen.
Our progressive, Democratic county government is trying to protect us, But KKKEMP, UGA administration, and white, non-A-CC resident (Republican) business owners are trying to kill us. Literally.
Athens is KKKEMPs hometown, BTW.
