Former GOP Sen. Nancy Kassebaum endorses Democrat Bollier in Kansas Senate race
Source: Kansas City Star
Former Kansas Republican Sen. Nancy Kassebaum endorsed Democrat Barbara Bollier Thursday for the Senate seat that she held for 18 years.
Kassebaum was the first woman elected to a full term in the U.S. Senate whose husband had not previously served in Congress.
Known for her moderate outlook, Kassebaum served from late 1978 to 1997 when she was succeeded by fellow Republican Pat Roberts, who Bollier is running to replace.
Kassebaum pointed to Bolliers approach to the COVID-19 pandemic, support for public education and her opposition to President Donald Trumps tariffs as reasons she was backing the Democrat.

(25,855 posts)register as Republicans just so they can vote in the Republican primary. When I lived there I'd argue with them that doing so artificially made Republicans look even stronger and Democrats even weaker than they really were.
Interestingly enough, I'd get one of two responses as to why they did so. One was they'd vote for the more moderate Republican in the race, so they could live with that person being elected. The other was they'd vote for the more extreme person in the race, because then people would vote for the Democrat. Assuming one was even running, which wasn't always the case. A sensible Dem who might want to run for office would look at the voter registration numbers and think, Why bother?

(56,828 posts)that is what I had meant - sorry for the poor language - I wanted to finish up before I had a call for work, so rushed it. Right now, it seems Bollier is slightly behind in the polls there, so I think she may have had a better shot at winning vs Kobach. Bollier was polilng well ahead of Kobach earlier this year, which is why there was talk of Pompeo leaving State & running for Senate in KS. The original Dem candidate was Barry Grissom, who was a US attorney under Obama, and Grissom had been ahead of Kobach as well. However, Grissom dropped out when Bollier entered the race.
