Covid ‘Superspreader’ Karaoke Night and Other Events at Social Club of Palm Coast Cause at Least 2 Deaths and Up to 50 Infections

September 22, 2020 | FlaglerLive | 12 Comments

Snyder first revealead the superspreader on Tuesday in an interview. On Wednesday, he amended the findings, saying one of the two deaths was associated with the same club, but from an earlier event.

“This is actually a pretty dramatic event, it’s almost publishable, it’s that dramatic–50 people from one event, including deaths. It’s really a tragedy,” says Dr. Stephen Bickel, the medical director at the Flagler and Volusia health departments and a rigorous analyst of the latest covid-related medical literature. “It’s certainly profound ignorance of the risk. The public may not be aware of what a risk this is. I thought they did, but maybe not. I know that churches are not having singing in their services because of this kind of stuff. I don’t know if people realize it, but karaoke is as bad or worse, because they do it for a long period of time, you’re in a closed space.”

The superspreader is illustrating a growing consensus in scientific tracts about how, in a disproportionate number of cases, a small number of people is responsible for infecting large groups. Getting a better handle on that may help public health and other officials more effectively target the sort of events or situations that cause those larger outbreaks–like social events and gatherings–and thus more strategically or surgically limit those events, or make them more safe, without resorting to more wholesale bans or closures.

“This karaoke thing is a classic example, little old Flagler County has its own superspreading event,” Bickel said. “Most places will never have an event this dramatic.”

Where the hell has this Medical Dir. been? This type of thing was known MONTHS ago. This is why to this day, ever since our governor here in PA closed us down back in March and then slowly started opening things up again, Philly has yet to allow bars/clubs (for "standalone drinking" and events) to reopen unless they served food as well and this with limited capacity AND initially outdoors only. We literally only started allowing restaurants/clubs to have "indoor service" the day after Labor Day (again limited capacity).

We saw when Allegheny County (which includes Pittsburgh) opened up indoor bars and restaurants and there came the spike and a subsequent shut down of that until it was brought under control -

Covid-19 rates spiked in Allegheny County after bars and restaurants reopened, county health department says

By Alec Snyder, CNN

Updated 8:41 AM ET, Wed July 1, 2020

(CNN) Covid-19 cases have spiked in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, in the aftermath of the county's decision to reopen bars and restaurants, officials said. Amie Downs, the county's executive communications director, told CNN Tuesday the numbers have increased dramatically since mid-June, when bars and restaurants were permitted to reopen.

The county has since closed them again to on-site consumption, but cases continue to climb. "According to our health department director, before mid-June, cases were coming from household contacts or other identified places," Downs said. "In mid-June, it switched to people not knowing where they got it, so there was more community spread."

Allegheny County data provided to CNN shows daily case rates stood in the single digits or teens in early June before surging in the second half of the month, hitting a June high of 109 new cases identified Tuesday. Downs said the county health department was able to determine bars and restaurants were largely to blame after ruling out protests. Protesters who got sick were often isolated cases, she said.

"Individuals reporting they attended a protest or other mass gathering have not matched, meaning they went to different protests or demonstrations," Downs said. "There was no commonality."

Sorry to rant as a reply to your post but I can see that we are never going to get rid of this thing any time soon.

and has a bad 11.7% test positivity rate (U.S. overall is 5.0%)

My state of Minnesota has moved up to 18th worst state in the daily new cases per capita moving average metric , no thanks to our 4 U.S. neighbors who all rank in the top 5:
#1 North Dakota
#2 South Dakota
#3 Wisconsin
#4 Oklahoma
#5 Iowa
