Putin says Russia and U.S. should agree not to meddle in each other's elections

Source: AP

President Vladimir Putin called on Friday for an agreement between Russia and the United States to guarantee not to engage in cyber-meddling in each other’s elections.

In a statement ahead of the U.S. presidential election on Nov. 3, Putin called for a reset between Russia and the United States and said he wanted an agreement between the two countries to prevent incidents in cyberspace.

“(I propose)... exchanging guarantees of non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, including electoral processes, including using information and communication technologies and high-tech methods,” he said.

Moscow’s relations with Washington are at post-Cold War lows as the election looms. U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia interfered in the 2016 U.S. presidential election with the aim of tilting it in Donald Trump’s favour, including by hacking into the campaign of his rival Hillary Clinton. Moscow denies that charge.

Putin is proposing an election non-interference pact with US while ramping up his multi-faceted attacks on US elections.

100% gas lighting because right now look at the disinformation campaigns that Russia
is running, Joe Biden is old and feeble which the White House is amplifying and the
Russian talking points about Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, the Ukraine, and Burisma which
Sen. Ron Johnson now selling.

But that's a big if.

Simply put, this cyber war has potential to escalate post Trump since the US could very well clamp down some serious sanctions on Russia.

Ultimately, it's all about trade and the huge sums of money that could flow between the two nations if they would just play nice.
Even though Putin rules Russia with an iron hand, the Oligarchs will bring a lot of pressure to bear on him to provide for a more favorable environment for the flow of commerce.

As I said, it's a big if.
A lot of damage has been done to the United States, and it will take a long time to fix what Trump and the Republican Senate broke, especially in the Judicial Branch.
It would be easier to do if Russia backed off, so Biden may choose to take a pragmatic stance toward Russia to get the job done.

I suspect this would only be used to try and justify giving them information about our cyber-security methods and sources. Putin wants to know how we have figured out what we know about their meddling. All the better to go undetected next time.
