Helen Reddy: Australian singer of feminist anthem I Am Woman dies
Source: BBC
Helen Reddy, the Australian singer behind feminist anthem I Am Woman, has died aged 78. Reddy died on Tuesday in Los Angeles, her family said in a statement on Facebook.
Her children Traci Donat and Jordan Sommers described her as a "wonderful mother, grandmother, and a truly formidable woman".
"Our hearts are broken. But we take comfort in the knowledge that her voice will live on forever."
Reddy had a string of pop and rock hits in the 1970s, but is best known for the 1972 anthem I Am Woman - a rousing tune which became prominent in the women's liberation movement.
A sleeper hit, it went on to sell millions of copies worldwide, making Reddy the biggest-selling female artist globally for two years running.
In collecting her 1973 Grammy Award for best female vocalist, Reddy famously thanked "God because she makes everything possible".

And I did see a thread in GD so I immediately checked LBN because I thought this belonged here instead. I feel that way a lot - if it's important enough, it belongs in LBN. And those get my recs.

You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul

(34,109 posts)It was my first year in college. My father let me go to college to "find a husband", his actual words and my mother agreed. I wanted to learn. It was hard, I was raised to be a do what I was told kind of girl. That song strengthened something in my back that I was always told did not exist....my spine. I have never been the same. I remember where I was when I first heard it. It hit the right notes and it still makes me get goosebumps and small tears when I hear it and I sing along as if my life depended on it, because it did.
RIP Ms. Reddy and a big thank you
