Detroit officials project 50% voter turnout and fewer absentee ballots than expected

Source: Detroit Free Press

Detroit election officials are projecting 50% voter turnout in the city of Detroit, higher than in 2016, but lower than in 2012 and 2008 when Barack Obama's candidacy drew high voter participation.

And the number of absentee ballots the city is expecting is now lower than officials had estimated earlier this month.

Speaking Thursday to reporters in the basement of TCF Center in downtown Detroit, Detroit City Clerk Janice Winfrey and other election officials said they are working to prepare for a historic election in Michigan — a swing state that many will be closely watching next week.

"We want people to have confidence in the process," Winfrey said. "Your vote matters."

Or some other kind of New & Improved Facts? Such as the allegation of living in a bubble another "reporting of facts."

The 50% turnout would be higher than the roughly 48% turnout in 2016, but lower than in 2012 when there was 51% turnout and 2008 when there was 53% turnout, Baxter said. The higher turnout in 2008 and 2012 was because Barack Obama's candidacy energized many voters in Detroit, he said.

I also had some info from Detroit and from Miami-Dade a while ago and many castigated me. Actually it is good to have report like yours. This will help to improve turnout of our voters. Proof is the pudding. It is no coincidence Obama and Biden are going to Detroit. Same with Kamala going to Miami this Saturday. I have written to Biden campaign about Detroit and Miami issue a lot. Hope it played 1% part in their push. Believe me Detroit was a lot lower than 48%. I am glad it would be 50%. It is also very depressing absentee ballots are pending in Detroit and Miami. Hope they can work hard over the next 2 days. I think it will improve.

Detroit should be more enthused about Biden than Obama. Biden is coming at a time of racial injustice. If the way Michigan governor was castigated does not help turning out more Democrats, nothing can.

Vote, vote, vote.

And discussed in such a way to skew what it actually meant. You doubledowned when those of us who live here corrected you.

You then tripledowned.

Those of us actually working on the ground here dislike folks from other states telling us we are wrong. When we aren't.

and I believe this is voter suppression unless this is somehow intended to cause a higher turnout by way of scaring voters in Detroit into understanding they will have to contend with the destruction of our democracy by a fascist wannabe dictator and his GOP cronies in crime that will suspend all elections until maybe his family dies out generations down the road. Ivanka next leader, then trump jr or vice versa, then Jarad and the immigration nightmare creator Stephen...

The mayor, the city clerk, all Dems. Multiple ballot drop boxes around the city. No big "militia" gatherings. Even the weather has been pretty good.

I don't know why there is only a 50% voting rate, but I don't think it's because of external factors.

Vote.

50% predicted to vote. Yet after the next racist cop episode, you can bet 100% of those who didn't vote are going to complain.

I know about the suppression, the purging of rolls, the intimidation AT the polls. But at some point you have to speak, to be heard. Throwing in the towel is not an option.

The only language that works, at this point, is the language of the vote.

absentee ballots. It could very well be that many are waiting until Nov. 3 to do either. We do need some voters to get out on Nov 3 to counter the ground swell of expected Trump voters.

Let's not be afraid of the facts but let the facts spur us into necessary actions if only to call relatives in Detroit and surrounding areas to get out there and vote!
