Most World Leaders Express Hope, Relief After Biden Win

Source: AP News

World leaders swiftly congratulated U.S. President-elect Joe Biden on his victory Saturday, cheering it as an opportunity to fortify global democracy and celebrating the significance of Americans having their first woman vice president.

Although U.S. President Donald Trump did not concede defeat, relief was a common theme expressed in many parts of the world to the news that his reelection bid had failed. “The Americans have chosen their President. Congratulations @JoeBiden and @KamalaHarris! We have a lot to do to overcome today’s challenges. Let’s work together!” tweeted French President Emmanuel Macron.

Other leaders who sent congratulations included German Chancellor Angela Merkel, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg and Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi. The president of Ukraine, whose country was central to Trump’s impeachment and an attempt by the Trump campaign to paint Biden and his family as corrupt, offered speedy congratulations.

Most Western allies quickly welcomed a fresh start with a new administration in Washington. “We’re looking forward to working with the next U.S. government,” German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas tweeted. “We want to work in our cooperation for a new trans-Atlantic beginning, a New Deal.” Word of the victory in Pennsylvania that pushed Barack Obama’s former vice president past the threshold of 270 Electoral College votes needed to take over the Oval Office cascaded around the globe on social media and live news broadcasts, sparking celebrations...

Things will change because Biden is highly experienced in governing, and also has a highly experienced team he can rely on, supported by a majority public who support this administration. That is a win-win-win combination. As Kamala said yesterday, it won't be easy healing and repairing/restoring the country back to normalcy. We so desperately need Biden/Harris to lead us back to greatness as leader of the free world and great prosperity - for us and for our families.

The decline and eventual death of AM hate radio.

In the 1990's, violent crime in the US declined precipitately after hitting a bruising peak in the 1970's and 80's, and no one was really sure why. Environmental scientists finally concluded that switching to unleaded gasoline was a major cause. Leaded gasoline spewed millions of tons of lead into the atmosphere. Lead poisoning causes brain damage, mood swings, violent behavior, decreased inhibition, and other factors that lead to increased crime rates. Unleaded gas relieved a lot of that.

I think the political division in the US may improve in just such an odd and unexpected way. AM talk radio's audience is made up almost entirely of aging white, straight, cisgender men. And the loud-mouthed demagogues who dominate the airwaves pour an unending stream of grievance into their ears. I can state from personal experience that subjecting oneself to that toxic miasma all day every day will cause increased and prolonged outbursts of anger in the listener.

The audience for AM hate radio is dying off, day by day. And while young people coming up today are able to get their hate fix just as easily on online social media, I don't think it's going to be as generationally influential as radio.

We shall see...

I wonder if the rise in crime during the 70s and 80s was caused by demographics? Maybe there were a lot more young man than young men who were born in the 50s and early 60s. And they commit most of the violent crimes.

Hours ago I also thought this was like V-E Day. The defeat of fascist Nazis both times, just occurred to me.

We must keep fighting the fascists and can't let them take over.

They'll be back to try again, with a more acceptable leader..

We really have lived through four years of hell. It's nice to know the rest of the world was pulling for us. And now they are celebrating with us.

(I love hearing church bells ring. I wish I lived near a church, just so I could hear the bells.)

Fireworks over London and Berlin. Cries of joy and spontaneous dance parties in the streets from Canada to India. Most of the world is celebrating and supporting us in the end of this nightmare. I've been watching celebration videos online all day, pretty much.

BUT

The next 70-some days will be INCREDIBLY dangerous. Dumpf still has the power of the Presidency, and once he gets past the Denial stage and moves on to Anger, anything is possible. We need to stay alert.

place full page ads in all the major newspapers in our (former) allies' big cities simply saying "AMERICA IS BACK UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT. Thanks for your patience while we rebuild." Maybe in color.
