As COVID-19 cases surge, Philadelphia public schools will remain virtual until further notice, The Inquirer has learned.
Principals received the notice Tuesday morning in an email from Evelyn Nunez, the Philadelphia School Districts chief schools officer.
Based on the most recent updates from the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, in order to help safeguard the health and well-being of our staff, students and families, The School District of Philadelphia has determined that all schools will remain fully virtual at this time, Nunez wrote.
Students in prekindergarten through second grade were supposed to return to school Nov. 30, and teachers in those grades were scheduled to return to classrooms Monday.

They were going to start phasing in the "hybrid" type model of mixed virtual and in-person, with the youngest ones starting first. But what seems to be happening at schools around the country, is that more and more children and staff are coming into the buildings testing positive - pretty much mostly from their outside of school exposure. It's similar to what is being seen with the sports teams - all the mitigation going on at sports facilities and training locations seem to make no difference when the infections are happening outside of the venues and bought there, risking a spread (although it would be mitigated and minimized instead vs being a super-spreader opportunity).

(128,921 posts)which is almost 600 cases per day. We had gotten down to in the 30s - 40s per day at our lowest, post-initial infection in the spring.
And the weekends tend to have lower results included because some labs don't report on weekends, so that was just from those labs that did report (along with some batches probably from last week that were delayed and finally submitted as a large batch).
