The Latest: Fauci: Wear Mask, Stay Distant To Avoid Lockdown

WASHINGTON --Dr. Anthony Fauci says he doesnt believe the United States will need to go into lockdown to fight the coronavirus if people double down on wearing masks and social distancing. The nations top infectious disease expert says the cavalry is coming in the form of vaccines. He says, Help is really on the way.
Fauci told ABCs Good Morning America on Thursday that vaccines being developed are going to have a major positive impact once they start being deployed in December and early into next year. He says he hopes by April, May and June the ordinary citizen should be able to get a vaccine.
In the meantime, Fauci says there are fundamental things Americans can do to stem the spread of the deadly virus. They include universal and uniform wearing of masks, avoiding crowds, keeping social distance and washing hands. He says that sounds simple against a very difficult challenge but it really does make a difference.
Faucis message echoes that of President-elect Joe Biden, who this week signaled strongly that fighting the raging pandemic will be the immediate priority of his new administration...

(6,917 posts)Perfect is the enemy of good. This is medical science, not political science. Masking, distancing, and a vaccine with a 90% efficacy rate will have an effect even if every Trump supporter doesnt believe it.
They cant wish the results away. And giving those idiots credit for winning the public health challenge of our lifetime is premature at best.

(32,017 posts)Barely 25% of people in rural East Texas are wearing masks at this point. Social distancing is basically non-existent. A national lockdown may be required.

There are those of us that have been doing this. If people had been doing it all along we wouldn't be where we are w/ this virus.
So those that follow this advice will do so for a year, a year and a half... two years--until everyone else gets on board.

(15,286 posts)Think about your own pre-covid observations of human behavior. Most people do not naturally crowd together and many take active measures to avoid it even in crowded situations. All I do is stay a bit farther apart from others than I normally do. It's not a big deal at all.
