Shelton's Fed Candidacy Hits Setback in Senate

WASHINGTON—Senate Republicans failed to secure enough votes Tuesday to advance the confirmation of Judy Shelton to a seat on the Federal Reserve’s board of governors.

The outcome indicated that Ms. Shelton, an outspoken critic of the central bank who is close friends with Mr. Trump’s economic adviser Lawrence Kudlow, doesn’t have enough support to win Senate backing.

The vote was expected to be close due to opposition from a handful of Republicans and all Democrats.

Ahead of the procedural vote, three Republicans—Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah, Susan Collins of Maine and Lamar Alexander of Tennessee—said they wouldn’t support Ms. Shelton, citing both her unorthodox policy views and apparent inconsistencies in those views as Mr. Trump weighed selecting her for the seven-member Fed board last year.
