NEW DELHI (Reuters) - Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken to U.S. President-elect Joe Biden by telephone to congratulate him on his election victory, which he said showed the strength of U.S. democracy, and he vowed to deepen strategic ties.
Modi initially sent his congratulations to Biden in a social media message soon after U.S. television networks projected him to be the winner of the Nov. 3 election even though President Donald Trump has refused to concede defeat.
Modi followed that up with a phone call to congratulate Biden and reaffirm his commitment to a strategic partnership between the two big democracies, Modi said on Twitter late on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Modi warmly congratulated President-elect Biden on his election, describing it as a testament to the strength and resilience of democratic traditions in the United States, the Indian foreign ministry said.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan congratulated President-elect Joe Biden on Tuesday, expressing Turkeys determination to work closely with the new administration.
I believe that the strong cooperation and alliance between our countries will continue to contribute to world peace in the future, as it has done so far, Erdogan said in his congratulatory message, made available by his office.
Turkey was one of a handful of countries, along with Russia, that had not commented on Bidens victory, which was announced Saturday. A senior Turkish official said Monday that Ankara would wait until legal challenges to the U.S. election results were resolved and for the outcome to be finalized. It was not clear what made Erdogan change his mind.
NATO allies Turkey and the United States have been at odds over the past years over a number of issues, including on policy over Syria and Turkeys decision to purchase Russias advanced anti-aircraft missile systems, which prompted Washington to expel Turkey from its F-35 stealth fighter program.
