Ex-Jeffrey Epstein girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell seeks $28.5 million bail package

Lawyers for the former girlfriend of Jeffrey Epstein are urging a judge to free her to await trial under a $28.5 million bail package that would include armed guards to ensure she remains safe and doesn't flee a New York City residence.
The bail arguments on behalf of Ghislaine Maxwell, first filed under seal last Tuesday, were publicly released late Monday with redactions in Manhattan federal court that were approved by Judge Alison J. Nathan.
They were supported by numerous letters from family and friends who insisted that Maxwell sought seclusion in a New Hampshire home in December 2019 after receiving death threats and worrying that the public and media would find her at a home where she lived with her husband.
A security specialist who offered to pledge $1 million toward the bail package and to provide armed security for Maxwell if she is released on bail said Maxwell retreated into a back room of her residence when the FBI approached on July 2 because it was thought reporters had found her.

(2,993 posts)I bet a good prosecutor could get that transfer reversed; given that she was personally under investigation at the time, the transfer would almost certainly have been to shelter it from being used to pay fines and restitution to victims.

(3,056 posts)I know this is the word that the media is using to describe her, and it fries me every time. I just got through teaching about human trafficking in Health class. She was Epstein's procurer, pure and simple. I look in my kid's eyes (when we're in class together) and it tears me up that human garbage like her scope playgrounds and malls looking for their victims...my students.
She deserves to rot in jail.

(2,993 posts)the best place for her is in prison. They can't reach her there.
And anyone who thinks she'd stay put if let out - I've got a bridge for sale. Good location between New York City boroughs.

(23,322 posts)Taxpayers should not fund a friggin bail package for this person. Much cheaper to keep her in jail. Im sure shes as safe as she needs to be in her cell.

(7,634 posts)The bail is paid by the person who is in jail awaiting trial, not the other way around.

(2,993 posts)Has anyone among the prosecutors indicated that a bail "package" would even be considered? I know remanded defendants often continue to request bail, but for someone who is so flagrantly obvious a flight risk - not to mention someone who would have a neon target on her back should she be walking the streets - surely the original "No" would have been emphatic.
She can keep spending her money on efforts to get cut loose, but at some point, enough is enough. No is no.

(4,386 posts)I'd make her prove it was legally acquired and had paid taxes on it. Then deny her bail. She should rot in prison.
