Joe Biden picks Pete Buttigieg to be transportation secretary
Source: CNN
CNN)President-elect Joe Biden will nominate Pete Buttigieg to be his transportation secretary, sources familiar with the matter tell CNN, elevating the former South Bend, Indiana, mayor and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate to a top post in the federal government.
Buttigieg would be the first Senate-confirmed LGBTQ Cabinet secretary should his nomination make it through the chamber.
The choice vaults a candidate Biden spoke glowingly of after the Democratic primary into a top job in the incoming administration and could earn Buttigieg what many Democrats believe is needed experience should he run for president again.
The role of transportation secretary is expected to play a central role in Biden's push for a bipartisan infrastructure package.

(5,315 posts)were already crowded with many people with more talents and experience. Remember that Pete's only governing experience is mayor of a medium sized city. He has much, much to learn before I would consider him experienced enough for major high profile positions, especially amidst all the crisis' we are currently under. This cabinet position probably perfect for him to hone his leadership skills and gain the experience and notoriety to seek higher office. This is a very young, very bright guy with a great future. Pete can be a force in the party for easily the next 40 years. I think Joe Biden has put him in a good place to groom him for bigger and better things.
hlthe2b
(102,298 posts)whether or not that was a cabinet position. While we need someone good in transportation, it is unlikely our economic crises will allow for that to be a major focus of spending in the near future, so I see the position as less viable for showcasing his skills and more a correction for what has NOT been done the past four years. Conversely, even a non-cabinet position might have been more amenable to both honing his skills and allowing him to promote the Biden agenda with the media.

(5,315 posts)Pete has a very long career ahead of him. I'm sure he'll make the best of every opportunity that comes to him.
Also to his credit, he put himself in this position by being brave enough, as an unknown mayor in a red state, to jump onto the national scene by running for DNC chairman 4 yrs ago and running for pres this time. Most small town mayors would have never had the vision to do that, let along the skills to pull it off.

(48 posts)Regardless of his position, I hope he's prepared to be on every single evening and weekend news show for the next four years. And I hope Democrats start study groups where they watch and rewatch his appearances so they can learn how to frame the message.

(26,299 posts)First because it would help create a massive amount of jobs and second because a good economy needs a good infrastructure to be able to function and transport goods from one area to another at a reasonable price and third because a good infrastructure is vital to our nation defense.

(102,298 posts)will not come immediately, given our need to deal with the pandemic and halt the economic destruction first. Money upfront for infrastructure--no matter how many jobs it might create-- will not be the first round of major policy initiatives--even IF we manage to take GA's Senate elections--maybe by end of year 2, if we are lucky.
The point I am actually making--only that Buttigieg has some very unique skills that would be more useful elsewhere IMO. I have no problem with him anywhere in Biden's administration

(53,792 posts)The trans. sec will be instrumental in planning that and when projects do get started it will mean jobs and an economic boost whether it's two, three or four years from now. No one thinks anything will happen immediately in Jan.

(17,311 posts)A more high-profile cabinet position where Pete would be in front of the cameras using his polished public speaking skills would have been optimal.
If we look at past Secretaries of Transportation, it's like a who's who list of WHO???
Elaine Chao was almost invisible
Anthony Foxx
Ray LaHood
Mary Peters
Norman Mineta
Rodney Slater
Anyone recall memorable moments involving them? There might have been one or two, but not much at all.

(314 posts)This is going back awhile, but I believe Elizabeth Dole was Secretary of Transportation and was very effective when seat belts were mandated. I think it depends on the person and what they do with the position. Mayor Pete will be at cabinet meetings and can contribute a lot.
Good, I do not want him anywhere near our foreign policy, too hung ho military/war. He will do a great job as Secretary of Transportation. We need better train service here on the West Coast and Inland Empire. Having to drive hundreds of miles to get anywhere is such a pain AND it's bad for the environment..

(11,813 posts)...like to work in a Biden cabinet. I'm also fairly certain this WAS NOT Mayor Pete's first choice. But, it was probably on his list, and given the work ahead of him, I don't think anyone can consider this a cush job. Not in the least.

(3,396 posts)a transportation business in China while making a ton of money for her and Mitch...
Now, the real job has the following (I Googled it):
Other responsibilities range from negotiation and implementation of international transportation agreements, assuring the fitness of US airlines, enforcing airline consumer protection regulations, issuance of regulations to prevent alcohol and illegal drug misuse in transportation systems. The Secretary oversees the operating administrations of DOT and coordinates policies to provide an efficient and economical national transportation system.
It seems to be a very big position with a lot of responsibility.
I have to imagine that Buttigieg's 1st order of business will be of discovery to find out what Mitch's wife has done in the four years she has been at the job, and I am sure he will find out a lot.

(7,220 posts)Potential conflicts of interest
As Secretary of Transportation, Chao appeared in at least a dozen interviews with her father, James, a shipping magnate with extensive business interests in China.[69] Ethics experts said the appearances raised ethical concerns, as public officials are prohibited from using their office to profit others or themselves.[69] Federal disclosures cited by The New York Times revealed a gift to Chao and her husband Mitch McConnell from Chao's businessman father James, valued at between US$5 million and $25 million.[70] The company her father founded (and which her sister, Angela, currently runs), The Foremost Group, has extensive ties to the Chinese state and Chinese elites.[70] It obtained hundreds of millions of dollars worth of loans from a bank owned by the Chinese state, has substantial interests tied to a major shipyard funded by and long-term contracts with a steel producer owned by the Chinese state. In what The Times described as "a rarity for foreigners", Angela and James Chao have served on the boards of a Chinese state-owned shipbuilder, and Angela has been on the board of the Bank of China, as well as the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (which was created by the government of China).[70]
From January 2018 to April 2019, 72% of the total tonnage shipped by Foremost was shipped to and from China. The Foremost Group has almost no footprint in the United States other than its headquarters in New York.[70] During the period when Chao appeared with her father at promotional events for the family company, the US Department of Transportation repeatedly sought to cut funding and loan guarantees for domestic American shipping companies, shipyards, and shipbuilders. These proposed budget cuts were rejected by Congress in a bipartisan fashion.[70] Chao's Department also sought for three years to prevent funding for a program that supports the viability of small domestic US shipyards, and a separate program that issues loan guarantees for the construction or reconstruction of ships with American registration.[70]
Chao pledged in 2017 to sell the stock she had earned while she was on the board of directors of Vulcan Materials, one of the largest suppliers of road-paving materials in the United States,[71][72] by April 2018.[71][73] After the Wall Street Journal and other major news outlets reported in late May 2019 that she was still holding the stock, worth $250,000 to $500,000, she sold it on June 3, 2019,[73][72] for a gain of $50,000 since April 2018.[73]
In June 2019, Politico reported that in 2017 Chao had designated her aide Todd Inman as a special liaison "to help with grant applications and other priorities" for Transportation Department projects in the state of Kentucky, the only state to have such a liaison. Inman was to act as an intermediary between the Department, local Kentucky officials, and Kentucky Senator Mitch McConnell, who is Chao's husband. This resulted in grants of at least $78 million for projects in Mitch McConnell strongholds Boone County and Owensboro. Inman had worked on the 2008 and 2014 re-election campaigns of McConnell; McConnell and local officials brought up the grants when he announced in Owensboro in December 2018 that he was running for re-election in 2020. Inman later became Chao's chief of staff.[74]
In September 2019, the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives Committee on Oversight and Reform began an investigation into whether she used political office to benefit her family's business interests.[75][76] A September 16 letter from the Oversight committee to Chao documented allegations that the Department of Transportation was forced to cancel a trip to China in 2017 that Chao had planned to take because State Department ethics officials challenged her attempts to include her family members in official meetings with the Chinese government.[77]

Now we can think of another title for him. I have enjoyed Mayor Pete, but time to move on. I frequently forget how to pronounce his last name, so I need a new nickname. Something respectful. Not, "Highway Pete." Just something clever and respectful.
I am hoping that we get to see him more frequently than once a year. He is popular and positive. I'm really glad that he got a cabinet-level position.

(21,596 posts)Perhaps Buttigieg could enlist George Takei, who was on the Board of Directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District from 1973-1984, to help promote rapid transit issues and proposed projects. Takei cast the tie breaking vote to approve construction of the Los Angeles subway!
I actually met George Takei when he was in Chattanooga in the late 1970s for a local rapid transit authority meeting! He was very nice and very charming!
Politics
Takei was an alternate delegate from California to the 1972 Democratic National Convention. The following year he ran for a seat on the Los Angeles City Council, finishing second of five candidates in the special election and losing by 1,647 votes; the winner, David Cunningham Jr., received 42% of the votes cast and Takei received 33%. During the campaign, Takei's bid for the city council caused one local station to stop running the repeats of the original Star Trek series until after the election and KNBC-TV to substitute the premiere episode of the Star Trek animated series scheduled by the network with another in which his character did not appear, in attempts to avoid violating the FCC's equal-time rule.[78] The other candidates in the race complained that Takei's distinctive and powerful voice alone, even without his image on television every week, created an unfair advantage.[79]
Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley later appointed Takei to the board of directors of the Southern California Rapid Transit District, making him part of the team that initiated and planned the Los Angeles subway system. Takei was called away from the set of Star Trek: The Motion Picture in 1978 to cast the tie-breaking vote for the creation of the Los Angeles subway system. He served on the board from 1973 to 1984.[80]
