Trump appoints conservative activist Charlie Kirk to commission to promote 'patriotic education'
Trump has named 17 people to his 1776 Commission, which he created by executive order the day before the election to promote what he describes as "patriotic education" in schools -- intended to push back against curriculum that provides an unvarnished account of America's history of racism.
Among those he appointed to the commission, which is asked to provide a report to the president within a year on how to teach about America's founding, is Charlie Kirk, an ardent Trump supporter and right-wing activist who created a national youth organization that advocates for conservatism in schools.
{snip}
Trump's executive order claimed that "many students are now taught in school to hate their own country, and to believe that the men and women who built it were not heroes, but rather villains." That is in line with Kirk's belief that there is a "war on men" in America.
The commission is also supposed to prepare for the 250th anniversary of the United States in 2026, even though Congress already created a commission to do this in 2016 called the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission that has been meeting for years. ... Because Trump's commission was created by executive order, Biden can dismantle it or simply choose to ignore its recommendations once he's president.

(5,920 posts)Also some moles, some other ugly growths and I have about three days' stubble. Those issues need to be aired and discussed so that we all understand how we got to where we are. I'm not a fan of hiding or revising history. Let's discuss it and move forward. We can't reinvent things, and we shouldn't judge the past through our lens of today, but we can talk about why things happened so we don't repeat those mistakes.

(65,159 posts)...I have observed a few things I consider encouraging.
In science classrooms, climate change, evolution, pollution, and other topics are covered very matter of factly. There isn't a hint of subtlety. These things are real, they are problems, and here's how it's caused and here are solutions.
Observing the stuff on whiteboards about history, the Civil War was largely about slavery, Vietnam was a mistake, the red scare was based mostly on lies & made up conspiracies,...
No whitewashing.
It's what guys like the PIRV & Cook don't like.

For all practical purposes, I did not exist.
If I could do that time over, I'd make some changes.
All I can say about the era is that at least kids today, some or them, won't have to put up with that crap.

One EO: anybody appointed after Nov 3 is terminated, and if a professional appointment, special considerations for reinstatement apply.
If a political appointment, arrivederci!

(3,168 posts)I hate to harp on someone's looks, but why are so many of these right-wingers so damn ugly?
Kirk has major teethage, but the thing that is "off" about him is that he doesn't have enough face for his head. His forehead seems to go on forever.
