MAGA leaders call for the troops to keep Trump in office
Source: POLITICO
A growing call to invoke the Insurrection Act shows how hard-edged MAGA ideology has become in the wake of Trumps election loss.

An 1807 law invoked only in the most violent circumstances is now a rallying cry for the MAGA-ites most committed to the fantasy that Donald Trump will never leave office.
The law, the Insurrection Act, allows the president to deploy troops to suppress domestic uprisings not to overturn elections.
But that hasnt stopped the act from becoming a buzzword and cure-all for prominent MAGA figures like Sydney Powell and Lin Wood, two prominent pro-Trump attorneys leading efforts to overturn the 2020 election, and even one North Carolina state lawmaker. Others like Michael Flynn, Trumps first national security adviser who was recently pardoned for lying to the FBI, have made adjacent calls for Trump to impose martial law. The ideas have circulated in pro-Trump outlets and were being discussed over the weekend among the thousands of MAGA protesters who descended on state capitols and the Supreme Court to falsely claim Trump had won the election.
At its core, the Insurrection Act gives the president authority to send military and National Guard troops to quell local rebellions and violence, offering an exemption to prohibitions against using military personnel to enforce domestic laws. Historically, it has been used in moments of extreme national strife the Civil War, the rise of the Ku Klux Klan, violent labor disputes, desegregation battles, rioting following Martin Luther King Jr.s death.
Only once, however, has it been used in the wake of an election and that was to stop a literal militia from seizing the Louisiana government on behalf of John McEnery, a former Confederate officer who had lost the 1872 governors race. ...................................................

(1,568 posts)I always thought at a minimum most Americans shared the idea that such things are bad even when it's "our guy" who would be doing it. I guess I was wrong. Frightens me that so many people can be lead down that path so easily.

These guys are fundraising hundreds of millions of dollars, from the suckers.
"Give us money so we can stop the steal!"
Yet where is that money going?

(42,763 posts)in keeping with the Insurrection Act's original intent, because 60 courts have proven that an election outcome ("stop the steal"
is not sufficient justification for invoking it.

(1,057 posts)Sorry to repeat myself, but as a veteran, I take particular umbrage at the seditious activities of disgraced Lt. Gen. Flynn. When Trump is gone, Flynn should be called back to active duty to face court martial for sedition.

(1,057 posts)Thanks brother. I was non-combat and spent my tour at Walter Reed in the mid-seventies and got to see, first hand, the human cost of Vietnam. However, the sacrifice of those men, and of the men and women serving since is denigrated by this traitor. It just boils my blood.

(14,566 posts)Or more specifically, the MSM talking about it.
Its almost like they read liberal sites, and see what they are the most afraid of, and then work towards that. With the idea that once it is in the public dialogue, it then becomes a possibility in the minds of people, whether for good or bad. Its like priming the public. Fits right into the "normalization" process they have been establishing for four years now.
It works. Say, like the media goes on about some gas price increase coming. When it does, because your mind has already grumblingly accepted it already because you have heard it every day, its not as much of a shock or abnormal.

(10,004 posts)a fair number of more liberal minded folks stopped going to the MSM for their information a long while ago due to what you say, while the crazies and MAGAts have flocked in droves thanks to all the fire stoking. It is all about money after all. And, those same crazies and MAGAts love to toss their money at anything that they like, regardless of whether it is a news outlet or a pathetic, grifting excuse for a president.

(13,582 posts)For starters there would have to be enough willing troops to occupy every city, town, and hamlet in America, not to mention monitoring interstates, river transport, ports, and airports. I suppose that if we stopped every foreign engagement and brought 100% of our troops home - we might get close. But that assumes our military really wants to start shooting Americans for a living.
