(CNN) President Donald Trump on Monday lifted coronavirus-related travel restrictions for much of Europe, the United Kingdom, Ireland and Brazil, effective on January 26 -- nearly a week after he leaves office.
In an executive order issued Monday evening, Trump said he had been advised to lift restrictions for European countries in the Schengen Zone, which consists of 26 countries, the UK, Ireland and Brazil but leave in place restrictions on travel from Iran and China.
"I agree with the Secretary that this action is the best way to continue protecting Americans from COVID-19 while enabling travel to resume safely," Trump wrote in the order, referring to Secretary of Health and Human Services Alex Azar.
President-elect Joe Biden is set to take over the presidency on Wednesday and his incoming press secretary, Jen Psaki, said that his administration would not lift the restrictions.

Because CNN updated its story, I UPDATED the last paragraph to add comment by Biden's press secretary saying the Biden administration will not list the restrictions

(16,254 posts)He surely knows Scotland warned him not to come there, right? It's called Covid avoidance...although I'd guess they don't like him being the main reason.

(7,012 posts)UK has the mutated Covid-19 that is suppose to be twice as infectious as the stain we have now.
I am sure it is already traveling around the US, but this will only speed up the infection rate.
Good luck with that.

(8,209 posts)European countries are restricting travelers from the US, and any European would have to be an idiot to come here when the entire country is going from peak to peak in cases, hospitalizations, and deaths.
Maybe he wants to make it easier for his wanna be revolutionaries--those with money anyway--to flee before the 20th.
Otherwise it's difficult to see what difference this will make over the next two days.

(7,012 posts)is no better. Their rates of infection are as bad as ours, if not worse.

(8,209 posts)Still difficult to see why anyone would want to come here now.
Especially if, when the travel restrictions come back Wednesday, leaving might become more difficult.
On the other hand, people may come fleeing from Brazil's mini-Trump administration. Which would be all right with me--progressive refugees from an authoritarian regime should always be welcome here. As long as they do a quarantine and get tested as soon as they arrive, and agree to wear masks and do social distancing for the duration of the crisis.

(109,037 posts)(Bloomberg) -- President-elect Joe Bidens incoming administration rejected a move by President Donald Trump to rescind coronavirus-related travel bans for non-American citizens arriving from the European Union, the U.K. and Brazil, which means the curbs will stay in effect.
Trump said in a White House announcement Monday that the bans could be lifted because of a decision last week by the administration to require international travelers to present either the results of a negative recent coronavirus test or evidence that they had already recovered from the disease. The change would go into effect starting Jan. 26, six days after Biden takes office.
But Jen Psaki, a spokeswoman for Biden, said the incoming administration plans to block Trumps move.
On the advice of our medical team, the Administration does not intend to lift these restrictions on 1/26. In fact, we plan to strengthen public health measures around international travel in order to further mitigate the spread of COVID-19, she tweeted.
