Authorities found sniper rifle, handcuffs in home of accused 'zip tie guy' in Capitol riot
Source: USA Today/Nashville Tennessean
NASHVILLE, Tenn. Federal agents recovered a sniper rifle and more than a dozen high-powered weapons from the home of Eric Munchel, a Nashville man charged in connection with this month's U.S. Capitol riot and storming in Washington D.C., new court documents show.
They also found a tactical vest covered in patches and a set of plastic restraints that match those that caught the attention of social media users in the aftermath of the riot and led to the nickname "zip tie guy."
The items, discovered when federal agents searched his home, are among several reasons why federal prosecutors plan to argue Munchel should remain in custody as his case proceeds, according to a a motion filed Wednesday in Middle Tennessee U.S. District Court.
The 31-page memo signed by federal prosecutors was filed in advance of a hearing set Friday to determine whether a judge will approve him to be released from custody.

(7,432 posts)We're past the Biden inauguration. Time to get to work and issue warrants. The FBI must show the nation that it's serious and resolute. Insurrections cannot be tolerated, and no participant can skate. None of them.

(3,150 posts)hell, some people would probably call my bolt-action elk gun a "sniper rifle". 100+ year old tech.
Zip ties, however seem to be pretty clear-cut evidence of intention to take hostages, what the hell else would you use them for at a riot?

(1,943 posts)How is a "sniper rifle" different from a hunting rifle or a target rifle?
Buzz cook
(2,472 posts)Not sure if that's the case but it sure wouldn't surprise me.

(18,656 posts)Would be considered a sniper rifle because it has a scope.
But it sounds really ominous, doesn't it.
Agree with the zip ties, doubtfulhe had them to repair damaged fencing. .

(65,057 posts)It was a 75th anniversary model I got very inexpensively, when the owner traded it in for something really expensive.
I knew a guy who moonlighted at the gun & ammo store, selling.
I got it for what they paid out.
The range I went to closed about 15 years ago when that area erupted with subdivisions.
No rifle ranges nearby. Everything is shot gun. So haven't used it in a long time
My scope is a cheap piece of crap.
I borrowed a better one when I tested at the range.
I can shoot, but a sniper, I ain't.

(28,262 posts)...until after we have more of these psycho right-wingers in custody. I'm sure your elk gun won't mind.
Thanks for the concurrence on the "zip ties," aka "flex cuffs."

(3,122 posts)Lets quit soft petaling the capabilities of the 1/6 Terrorists to project violence onto the rest of us. They need to be arrested, convicted, and stripped of their right to own firearms, just like other common criminals.

(3,150 posts)But please cite a link where it was the above-mentioned type rifle, or are you just making shit up?
I'm quite cool with tossing every godamned 1/6 terrorist into Gitmo and tossing away the key.

(19,246 posts)The only "sniper" rifle in the picture is a cheap bolt action Mossberg deer rifle to the right side. #29. It's about $350 at Walmart.

(2,971 posts)weapon in WW2, and it consisted of four .50 machineguns firing at a combined rate of 2300 rounds per minute.
The semiautomatic rifle you're speaking of has a practical rate of fire of perhaps 10 rounds per minute, less than 1% that of the quad .50.
It almost always took many hits from .50 machineguns to take down a fighter in WW2. A few hits on an airliner such as a 737, which masses thirty times as much, are extremely unlikely to take it out.
To characterize this as an antiaircraft weapon is stretching the definition of the term to the breaking point.

(4,993 posts)Price: $4k to ~$12K
Ammo: $5-$7 per round
Magazines: $150-200
Length: 48" to 60"
Weight: 33+ pounds (unloaded)
It is loud when fired (130+dB)
Not your typical gun used in a crime.

As you say, not a typical crime gun. It's use by criminals to assault people is virtually nil.
Airliners are very tough with a lot of redundancy built in. Hard to imagine where a single bullet can do enough damage to bring one down.

Please calculate the lead time to hit a target moving at 500 mph from 1,000+ yd away, compensating for bullet drop and wind drift. Also bearing in mind that hitting the cockpit is the only real chance of downing it, and your gun isn't full auto or belt fed.
There's a reason you see WW2 videos of US sailors dumping thousands of .50-caliber rounds at Japanese fighter planes without scoring a kill.

(11,949 posts)That said, I guess technically I own a sniper rifle. I shoot whitetails out to 300 yards. A better shot than I could use my rifle at 500 yards. But part of being an ethical hunter is not making questionable shots. But of course it only holds 5 bullets and used 1920s technology. No AR by any means.

(32,016 posts)The story writer must have had some reason for using that term. What is it? Lee Harvey Oswald used one of the junkiest rifles ever made, a MannlicherCarcano, to supposedly kill Kennedy from the 6th floor of a building. So it makes me wonder what a "sniper rifle" is.
