(CNN)President Joe Biden signed two more executive orders on Friday -- one focused on expanding food assistance and delivering stimulus checks to very low-income Americans, and the other on raising the minimum wage to $15 for the federal workforce -- as he continues his swift efforts to overturn his predecessor's policies.
The measures build on the President's drive to aid struggling families with a $1.9 trillion relief plan that he outlined last week. The plan would send another $1,400 in additional stimulus checks, extend unemployment benefits and nutrition assistance and provide more help to renters and homeowners in need.
That more ambitious proposal would have to go through Congress, while the steps outlined in Friday's orders don't require legislation and can be put in place faster.
In remarks before he signed, the President listed many of the financial troubles facing Americans, including that 1 in 7 households -- more than 1 in 5 Black and Latino families -- say they don't have enough food to eat, 14 million Americans have fallen behind on their rent and 900,000 people filed for unemployment for the first time last week.

(13,360 posts)It's still in the "plan" that needs to go thru congress...
I hate that they keep making it sound like the next round of $ is "on the way" when really it's not there yet... especially when SOME of us needed that like LAST MONTH, LAST FALL, etc...

(8,744 posts)Here for me and my daughter. I am doing fine but I cant imagine people in dire need, weeks or months ago that have seen nothing. The poorest do not have bank accounts and are, like me, waiting on a check.

(246 posts)I'm lucky enough to be working part time, mine was mailed on the 6th according to "get my payment", still yet to receive it. One site said it could be 3-4 weeks from the mailing date.

(2,243 posts)-It will tell you if it was sent. Like someone mentioned above, it could still take 3-4 weeks, even from the date it was sent.

(8,744 posts)I need to give IRS my bank info to stop this long waiting. Took 6 months for tax return. I do not trust them with my account info🤔. I mean, they send my SS direct.
This has to be really bad for poor people or seniors that do not even have a bank, and are in so much need of help.

(1,910 posts)With the Senate power sharing rules when there is a 50-50 split, we are basically done for the next 2 years. Biden will have to use executive orders as best he can. Maybe in 2022 we can get that 51st Senator and actually control the Senate.

(787 posts)He cannot unilaterally raise the minimum wage. What this EO does is raise the minimum wage for federal CONTRACTORS. Its not an across the board raise.

(11,468 posts)Who has the power to lift the entire federal wage? Its been so low for so many years.
