Joe Biden Speaks Out on George Floyd's Death, Issues Executive Orders to Address Racial Inequity

Source: People

President Joe Biden on Tuesday issued a series of executive orders aimed at addressing racial inequity in federal policy.

"We have never fully lived up to the founding principles of this nation, to state the obvious, that all people are created equal and have a right to be treated equally throughout their lives," he said during the signing.

The president referenced the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last summer and the subsequent protests against police brutality that rippled across the world as "a turning point in this country's attitude toward racial justice."

Floyd was suffocated last May after a Minneapolis police officer, Derek Chauvin, placed his knee on firmly on the back of his neck for nearly nine minutes. Floyd was handcuffed and lying on his stomach next to a Minneapolis patrol car.

Because if he does not address the fact that inequity is profitable, nothing is going to change. Just as racism, classism, and ageism are profitable. You cannot get rid of these things without removing the financial allure.

This needs a task force and deliverables.

I was listening to an MLK speech two weeks ago. You can't change people's hearts, but you can legislate their habits. He needs to find a way to cripple Trump's judicial appointments. And he needs to commute some sentences. I realize that this would REALLY bother the "law and order" folks, but I really don't care.

did something that quickly. And we know Barack had to avoid the "angry blackman" trope!

I'm pretty sure he will unveil more efforts as you said task force AND deliverables.

I'm pretty sure VP Harris will be schooling him where needed. Hopefully he'll gain an even more nuanced, and deeper understanding of the far reaching roots out there., and act from that.

Other things will help such as his new EO on private prisons.
I've been under the impression that private prisions treat their prisoners worse (not that govt run is always so good either). Since prisons usually have more black and brown people locked up at least there won't be more being built. Then we go after how the private ones are run, make them better. And of course figuring out how to let out most or all of the non-violent prisoners out with serious services to help them readjust to being back home, getting jobs, more education, etc.

If we are able to let out enough prisoners from both private, and public prisons - the violent criminals could be moved from private to public prisons, and the private prisons abolished .

Hopefully he can work on police reform - helpng to direct monies to education, mental health, and other social services (and better safe housing) for black, and brown people so jail/prison is waaay less an outcome.
Oh, yes, getting rid of current racist cops, and Demilitarizing the Police.

Obviously that also entails either seriously enforcing discrimination laws on the books already, and making new ones where needed. Like for instance finding out much quicker when businesses esp corporations secretly weed out black applications before even being seen.

It's like working a 3 or 4 dimensional puzzle of causes, effects from multiple variables! Some of it sequential, some of it as simultaneous as possible!
