Supreme Court won't halt Trump tax record turnover
Source: Associated Press
WASHINGTON (AP) In a significant defeat for former President Donald Trump, the Supreme Court is declining to step in to halt the turnover of his tax records to a New York state prosecutor.
The courts action Monday is the apparent culmination of a lengthy legal battle that had already reached the high court once before.
Trumps tax records are not supposed to become public as part of prosecutors investigation, but the high courts action is a blow to Trump because he has for so long fought on so many fronts to keep his tax records shielded from view. The ongoing investigation the records are part of could also become an issue for Trump in his life after the presidency. Trump has called it a fishing expedition and a continuation of the witch hunt the greatest witch hunt in history.

It should be more accurately titled "So you got banned for saying something racist or sexist or called for violence. Watch out - you might be on an FBI watch list!"

(1,751 posts)This allows the evidence to be gathered and submitted. The prosecutors can move forward with the case. Yes, he's a cheat and a fraud. That hasn't and will continue not to matter to those who adore him. But the legal ramifications from fines to incarceration became more readily available if a conviction can be garnered.

Before this is over, the republicans will declare cheating the US government as the most patriotic thing an American can do. They'll find vague references in the bible and recall some founders who dumped tea to avoid paying taxes. (never mind the details)
They already floated this during 2016 when Hillary accused him of cheating on his taxes. "It means I'm smart". Nary a Republican batted an eye.
Maybe it's worse than we can imagine.

All we CAN do is watch it, because it defies even our imaginations.

(295 posts)I was hosting a party late '70's (I was in my mid-20's), and there was this guy I met (friend of a friend, etc.), and the subject somehow came up, and he actually belittled me because I paid taxes. I was made to feel a fool, an idiot, in my own home by some smarmy wise-ass - and as I write this now, I recall the feeling that if more like him proliferate, the worse it's gonna get.
I'm proud to pay my taxes. It makes me part of the Grand Experiment. Of course I would love to pay less! But I have to trust that those monies are spent for the common welfare - even for shitheads like my party guest. What makes him smarmy and 'smart' is that he knows he's ripping-off everyone else and will still reap the benefits of society (or offshore accounts, if you're corrupt-yet-still-gets elected politician).
The 'smart' ones can hide behind so many layers upon layers of misdirection and rabbit holes of 'legality' and 'blind trusts' - so seeing the lid finally pried from his cold now-politically dead hands is most satisfying.
They put Capone on Alcatraz for tax evasion. I can't wait to see the worm wriggle on the DA's hook! What a fishing expedition that will be!
There will be no unity without accountability.

Throw everything you have at Trump, criminally, civil suits, boycotts, financial pressure. He and his family must be brought down.

(721 posts)The article says: "Trumps tax records are not supposed to become public as part of prosecutors investigation ..."
Doesn't this mean ONLY the prosecutor has access to records relevant to their case? What about the rest of the tax filings? If the records are not public, how can other potential charges be brought by other agencies?

Unless there's an unexpected leak of Rump's tax records the public won't know, at least for now. This is the start of accountability for Rump's financial crimes though, and for that I'm overjoyed.

In a one-sentence unsigned order, the court ruled that it would not step in to prevent the Manhattan district attorneys office from obtaining eight years of Trumps financial documents from his accounting firm.
The courts decision clears the way for the documents to be turned over to a grand jury that has been convened as part of an investigation into Trumps business dealings in New York.

(22,114 posts)something is rotten in Denmark (sorry Denmark, your Country is beautiful per my nephew who lived there for a bit!). As an auditor, especially when faced w/ the fact even before we're looking at the tax returns, so much resistance is being thrown up, that obviously something is afoot.
Two big things to look at, invalid or illegal massive deductions and undeclared income, while not declared on the tax returns themselves, cross checking claims of income, w/ other outside declared sources of incomes and payout by companies (such as interest paid by banks to their depositors etc. vs. what trump claimed, etc.).
My gut is telling me that he's took massive, unsupported deductions, after all, he's full of hot air isn't he? And he signed the returns true, as true and valid.
