At stake in Senate hearing Tuesday: The story of the Capitol riot, and who is responsible

This discussion thread was locked as off-topic by Omaha Steve (a host of the Latest Breaking News forum).

But Tuesday's hearing before members of two Senate committees could also become a battleground for competing narratives over what prompted the riot and who was responsible for it -- a question that has become even more pointed following former president Donald Trump's acquittal on an impeachment charge earlier this month.

Trump's allies in Congress and beyond have sought to downplay Trump's role in gathering his supporters in Washington and spreading the false claim that he, not President Biden, won the November election -- facts that led to bipartisan impeachment proceedings. Instead, they have sought to blame lapses by Capitol security officials -- and the congressional leaders they report to -- for the building's invasion.

"This is a moment to get the actual facts about what happened at the Capitol," she (Sen. Amy Klobuchar) said. "The issues we identify and the answers we get are part of the solution, so this isn't just about throwing popcorn at a movie screen to try to get sound bites. We actually have to make decisions in the coming months."

snip

While neither Irving nor Stenger has addressed the matter directly, a former Capitol security official who spoke to The Washington Post last month at Irving's request relayed that Irving dismissed Sund's request to place National Guard troops on call, citing the "optics" of stationing uniformed military personnel at the seat of federal government.

The Truth will come out starting today. And that is the riot was Trump and company's doing.

Trump gave out invites to the riot by giving out the day, the date, the time and the place.
Trump helped to pay for the riot by using campaign funds.
Trump had his acting head of the DoD decapitate the D.C. National Guard 2 days prior to the riot.
Trump was told by Rep. McCarthy of the violence around and inside the Capitol and refused to
put a stop to it.

BTW a majority of republicans blame Antifa* for the riot and some even think that the riot was Nancy
Pelosi's fault.

You know...because they believe it was largely “Antifa rioters” that caused problems that day.

The next time trump sends rioter their way.

They just need to tell Moscow Mitch and the others, “trust us, this is the safest route to go, so you won’t be harmed”.

and finally realized that there are 2 Committees doing this jointly - and I also learned something new (after looking it up) that the Senate Rules Committee (where Klobuchar is Chair) ALSO deals with the "administrative processes" of Congress itself (the buildings, the office assignments, etc), which I didn't know (I knew they were involved with the Presidential Transition process/activities).

(I believe the House Administration Committee which is separate from their Rules Committee), so it's interesting where the Senate shoe-horned that function. I'm more used to watching House hearings than Senate since the House has the "power of the purse" and working for the government as many years as I had, I made sure to watch/listen to their budget and appropriations hearings (along with Oversight, etc)...

Should be grounds for removal of Ron Johnson and others. Suspend the hearing and remove any Senator that blatantly violates the rules. period. Come on Senators, do your job and expel Ron Johnson et al.

UNLESS Klobuchar is authorized (I'm not sure) to rewrite new rules about expulsion.

The only rules on expulsion I've been able to find so far.

However, I'm fairly certain I heard Klobuchar mention and emphasize the joint hearing was about facts and NOT politics.

Indicating that is how this joint committee would proceed. I feel like if that isn't an indication that it is a rule that they were to go by, then there is no point mentioning that reference, in fact no point in holding a hearing on this at all, particularly since an independent commission is about to be formed and given the authority to proceed with hearings etc.

This was just a stupid exercise in so called oversight. Unfortunate really.

& questions to Ethics, I believe. It does look that way. But it's good for Klobuchar to get a baseline approach of Republican members so that she knows how to prevent their politicization in the future.

She might have some prior review of their questions put in place for future meetings.

Of course it was predictable, but none the less, another opportunity couldn't be passed up by these fascists cretins like Johnson I suppose.

I'm sure we know her to be that kind of leader. She gets no snark and innuendo in her committee, because she sets the oath-based framework of seriousness and doesn't make one thing about her leadership or power.

She just uses rules. And politicizers can't withstand rules.
